Anyone had any experience with any of these kits?  I saw the A and B kits in my local Hobby store for $10 each, wondered if they are worth the money.

I've used set A.  Usual decent stuff from Tamiya, but you can get the same effect using pastels from any art supply store with a much wider range of colours and cheaper.  You just need to nick one of your wife's make up brushes  :D.  They do need to be sealed afterwards too.

I wonder whether those are more durable than regular pastels?

Mig productions has been making pigments like that for some time already. http://www.migproductions.com/paginas%2 ... gments.htm

I usually drybrush acrylics of sand or leather colour, with a light white drybrush added to highlight details even better. Tinbitz is another favourite, but less easy to use, as drybrushing should be light. And the good old flesh or chestnut wash gives a rusty touch.

Might be thicker. Painting PVA glue on first might provide a muddy look - then add the colour.

I think most of this could be done just as easily (well with a bit of practice perhaps) using drybrushing and washes. Smoke and rust effects can be done very effectively using washes, sponged on paint, or, as Vanvlak suggested, drybrushing Tin Bitz. Dust and mud is fairly easy to drybrush on using Graveyeard Earth and Command Khaki. Just get a good finely bristled drybrush and make it sufficiently dry and it is a lot easier than it might sound. Easier than having to seal everything afterwards like the taimya sets anyway.

The Tamiya set seems softer and a little more "greasy" than plain pastels, so would probably be a bit more durable.  However, once sealed there's no difference IMO.  I think there is a bit of difference using pastels over drybrushing, but many of the pastel effects can be duplicated with subtle drybrushing.  I think you can get a more consistent result more easily with pastels, and they are better for gun/exhaust smoke stains for me at least.  The other neat thing with pastels is you can mix with water and a drop of dishwashing liquid to make a fantastic wash.  Run it roughly over panel lines and recesses, then rub off the excess with a tissue for a quick and effective shading job.
