OK, There has been a trend in the Wargame hobby of late to make paper terrain. Great, that is cheep (or so it used to be) and easy to flood a table with terrain just by printing out many copies. But there is more and more people trying to sell me one sheet for some silly amounts. Here is the latest one I saw. Two Pill Boxes for $10. Now I admit it is not nearly as bad as the Alpha Forge Dropship, but come on. What am I missing here? dafrca |

I think it's pretty outrageous to charge that much for paper terrain. Cardboard, maybe, but paper, give me a break. It might look nice at first, but come on, how much punishment/wear and tear could it possibly take? ![]() |

$10 for 3 paper bunkers (I play FoW, so 15mm for me)? I might buy one, to make molds for plaster bunkers, but that's it. They must expect people to burn photocopies. I sure wouldn't buy multiples! Get the paper templates, make it out of plasticard, or plaster for the bunkers. The Alpha Forge Dropship is too boxy. I've seen paper Templates for the FW stuff (or something so close it doesn't matter), and I was going to make some drop pods, but haven't gotten around to it yet (even downloaded the THawk, but it's too hard to figure out). |

Well, PaperTerrain does use cardstock, so it should be more durable than plain paper. I think the pillboxes are a bit over priced, but have you checked out the 6mm village sets? They are $15-18 and you seem to get a healthy number of buildings. Also, their buildings are built so you can slide off the building to reveal the ruined version. I admit I've been tempted but they don't have any sci-fi. |

See, for me this all kind of misses the point. If I wanted paper minis then I would pick up a board game such as Catan (which is really good). I like the idea (even if I dont always have the time) of minis to construct in tough 3D materials and paint. I guess that you could use the paper as a template for plasticard buildings, but then I would just go ahead and make one from scratch. |

There was a site I saw a while back that you could download building from...print em out and assemble as paper models or glue em to card for a tougher building. I d/l ed a couple but I never got around to assembling them. ib |

The guys at the FLGS bought a CD with a pile of buildings on it for $15. ?add 150 sheets of Cardstock for ~$5, and brand-new toner cartridges for the printer for ~$60. ?The shopkeep said they'll last about 60 pages. ?The particular disk had Fantasy buildings for D&D use, but I believe that they make other building sets. |

Just to be clear, my issue is not with the use of paper terrain. In the right place it could be quite useful. It is with people charging Resin prices and in some cases Gamers paying those prices for card stock. If you go to a local paper mart (Xpedex, Kirt, etc in the US) Card Stock is about $8-$15 a ream. That is 500 sheets people. Just wanted to be clear. dafrca |

I knew what you meant, daf. I agree the issue is the price they are charging, not the fact that it's paper. |

I know what you meant too. I just wanted to point out that not all of PaperTerrain's wares are quite as expensive for what you get. One thing to bear in mind is that the artist has invested his time into making the terrain, and wishes to make a profit on his investment. The cardstock is a small fraction of the total cost of the item. Working up the design, getting the sheets printed, posting them to customers adds up. Then, the volume times profit per unit needs to add up to the cost of living or the artist ends up on the street or in some crappy job where he is not making wargames terrain. Having said all that, I don't think I would buy those bunkers at that price. ![]() ![]() |

I do believe the creative does have value. I just question the value being that high. ![]() We are not talking about a unique design. We are talking about a box with two "arms" that have had some concrete texture poored into the design. Not a major issue in my mind. In any case, I have always believed if they can sell it then I am glad for them. ![]() dafrca |

It's not the paper, it's the full-color printing that costs. On anything less than a full commercial color printer (the kind that costs upwards of $15,000), the toner costs are really prohibitive. Even the Lexmark C750s (commercial-grade color laser printers) in my old office would choke on color saturation like what I saw on the sheets at the FLGS. You're talking production costs of over $1 per 8.5x11 page. The only way to reduce the production costs is to reduce the color density, which makes the product less likely to sell. |

Dafrca, do you like the old Titan Legions card buildings - not the plastic top ones, but the larger all-card version. |
