This years ropecon was for me all about 2 games. Epic&Starship trooppers and damn I had blast. Epic started up on saturday as Hena challenged me to practice game. I used my IG army I was planning to use for tournament so that I could get some idea on strenghts of the list(it's quite unusual to my reqular lists and has units I haven't ever tried before). Army list was:

infantry company: ig commander+18 ig infantry 350
infantry company: ig commander+12 ig infantry 250
infantry company ig commander+12 ig infantry 250
infantry company ig commander+12 ig infantry 250
super heavy tank-company: 3 baneblade+hydra 550
artirelly battery: 3 manticore 250
artirelly battery: 3 manticore 250
rough rider platoon: 6 rough rider 150
rough rider platoon: 6 rough rider 150
sentinel squadron: 4 sentinel 100
sentinel squadron: 4 sentinel 100
super-heavy tank platoon: shadowsword 200
thunderbolt flight: 2 thunderbolt 150

As you can see lots of activations with lots of cheap formations.

Anyway he had his tyranid host with big bio-titan, small bio-titan, BP4 artirelly nightmare, 2 positively huge swarms mix of tyranid infantry, carnifex host and genestealers + some nodes.

Anyway I got massacred big time(Hena will be creating more detailed report). About only success was with rough riders who with help of IG commander calling in for combined charge wiped out genestealers. And I think I actually accidently cheated. Do the rough riders have to stay within 5cm of the infantry company? If yes that was illegal move. Ah well. Not that it really mattered as my army was eaten up. My army deployed too far and those big bio-titans came in and soaked up everything I could threw at(darned fearless things couldn't be even driven in assaults). Slurps!

Second game was against friend whom I introduced epic in attempt to teach him enough he could play in tournament. Alas he didn't manage to make it to tournament but atleast he got one game(plus bunch of orks I sold him). I had designed him a list for tournament so I thought I would crush him(afterall I have more experience and I knew his list inside out. It's very similar to my usual ork armies. Fact that didn't go amiss to Team Traube when they noticed familiar looking ork army). He had great gargant, 2 big warbands(not literally big. Normal warband with 8 extra boyz. Lots of grots!), big bliz brigade and small bliz brigade with total of 3 supa-zzap guns and 4 flakwagons, big kult of speed with mix of bikes, buggies and skorchas, 3 fighta bommaz and 4 stompas.

Anyway game opened up promisingly enough for me as I showed him that IG ain't no wussies in assault and drove one warband away as they tried to charge(poor fellows). My artirelly was being only half effective(atleast they were half effective instead of useless like agaist Hena...). He also tried to blast my baneblades with his numerous supa-zzap guns(great gargant had 1 as well). Alas for him he kept rolling 1's to hit. No help from sustain fire for him...

However things got icky when his kult of speed crashed in and he suddenly turned my right flank to pieces. To my suprise at turn 3 I had lost. He had bliz objective and had control of HIS objectives...Whoops! This was embarassing.

But then came The Real Thing. And first up I face male part of Team Traube. We both had been looking up for facing each other across tournament game so this suited me fine. He had his bad moons around(pictures of those can be found in the tyranid playtest forum in Henas battle reports).

Now this was one strange game. For one orks outshot IG without problem. Secondly IG wore orks down in war of attrition during assaults. Hey isn't role supposed to be otherway around?-) That great gargant was just plain mean(especially as it has got unfair boost with MW barrage rules and totally ridiculous range increase though atleast that affected only one turn as we were informed of it late in game). Luckily I had plenty more where they came from! On left side IG and orks were in standstill(it's telling that after first turn both had big formation there in overwatch...And both were in firing range to begin with :D). So real fight was around my take and hold objective #2 where ork drove main assault. My troops were fighting furiously there and with help of fearless baneblade(other 2 were dead from lost assault) I was thinning down orks. Huzah for outnumbering orks!

By turn 4 I was just looking up for draw or loss in tiebreaker. When suddenly he couldn't bring any troops to his own bliz objective. Oops! He also sustain fired with warband on left at my company that was wiped out(I had tried to mount assault but darned other company there had refused to activate second time in a row leaving other company(that had moved in to provide support) stranded. Those were obviously bribed by orks!

However by sustain firing all he had on my side was one thinned down warband around my take and hold...He had by then 1 objective(and they shall not pass) and I had 0. I did have however have control of all objectives bar the one with orks...However they had BM's and I had fresh company near them...CHAAAAAAARGE!

Combat was close fought but after roll off I was ahead by 1! I suddenly had 2 objectives and was going to win if that formation doesn't rally(since he moved it to safe place in my side). 4+ to rally...He rolled 3. Huzah!

Okay lucky win due to him forgetting objectives(maybe he was half-sleep. It was sunday of ropecon and I know I was half-brain dead by then  :;): ). Nevertheless absolutly great guy to play against and his orks are just GORGEOUS, including that kustom made great gargant. Makes my orks turn even more green from envy.

And then. Star Wars Empire march music please...I would face in the second round...*Drums* Hena!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRGH!

Now nothing personal against Hena but he was last person I would have wanted to face on _second_ round of the tournament. This is getting repeative as this was 3rd epic tournament in past years and 3rd time he comes against me on the _second_ round of tournament. Couldn't he atleast have faced me in FIRST round or something? Got to attend tournament in england when I'm there just for sheer pleasure of being able to face somebody else in the second round(unless he flies there just to drive me crazy :D).

Anyway army for him was pretty similar except big beast was turned for small beast(which aren't even fearless?) and some more stuff was added. Again I'm sure Hena will fill in better so I won't even try to give detailed report but let's say I must be getting hang of fighting tyranids. First 2 turns were pretty positively looking and I thought I might even be winning this. Of course I was helped by Hena suffering from momentary insanity or something as he marched both small bio-titans into my lines(and not even as last actions so I had plenty of stuff to counter them with) and both were dealt with ease(one was dealt by big infantry company assaulting it to death).

In turn 3 my carefull plan that would have a) allowed me to destroy his 2 infantry swarms b) protect my bliz objective c) clear the way to his bliz objective(okay genestealers would be in between but baneblades aren't too worried).

Unfortunatly without SC rerolls this had 55% chance of failing due to failed activation...Bummer.

And yup. It failed. I didn't even get it half done with 1 being rolled for first activation. Give me non-mechanised army list with supreme commander formation WITHOUT those stinking chimeras. I want INFANTRY regiment and not mechanised regiment. Grrrrr!

Anyway that's one more defeat against bugs. My right wing collapsed instantly which gave him both take&hold and bliz objectives with me having nothing to prevent them being captured. On left I nearly wiped out infantry swarm but then genestealers charged infantry and broke 2 companies+baneblades but that was sideshow at this point anyway.

And then THE most boring game of epic EVER for me. And nothing to do with opponent(who was nice guy) nor his army(which did include whopping 5 batteries of night spinners) but because of scenario. Somebody had got bright idea of using scenario which used killing vp's as only  deciding factor. With neither side having then much of motivation to move forward boring game it was going to be. Wasn't helped by my activation rolls either. We got to play 2 turns(then time was called up) and in neither turns baneblades moved forward and only 1(that's ONE) shot from manticores. Thunderbolts also failed to break night spinner formation and surviving 'bolt(4 firestorms shoots and get 1 hit...) refused to come again.

I broke most of his night spinners eventually and 1 guardian host. He broke and mauled one small company and did little bit of this and that. Vp's 575-550 for eldars ie draw.

Dunno what my final standings were. Organiser haven't posted them yet(probably is still recovering. I know I was dead tired after the event).

What do you do when neither army has much of motive to move because moving forward would do more harm than good...

Atleast that round gave me new appreciatiation on the beatifull design on tournament scenario.

By the very least that scenario should have 2-3 objectives to be taken that are worth extra points(250 pts?) if contested in opponent half. That way you would have 500-750 points ready to be taken if you move forward.
