I've run into a problem. I'm trying to figure out how to have two forces face each other in combat (which they 'historically' did), but the write-ups for one side have their basic block of troops 500 strong, with 125-strong supporting formations, but the other side is written so that their basic block is 125-strong, with 25-strong supporting formations. Specifically, these are the forces of the Realm and Lookshy, from Exalted. The Realm deploys 'Legions' of 5000, with about another 2500 auxiliary troops (skirmishers, cavalry, etc.), breaking down into 10 'Dragons' of 500 men each. Each Dragon has two 'Wings', and each Wing has two 'Talons'. Each Realm Legion is based around 4 Dragons of Heavy Infantry, and 6 of Medium Infantry. The Legion's Auxiliaries are in 20 Talon-sized formations of specialists. Lookshy deploys 'Field Forces' made up of 5 Dragons (each consisting of 1250 troops), with up to 2 Dragons of specialists and support units. Each Dragon has 2 'Wings', made up of 5 'Talons' (125-men strong): 1 Talon of Ashigaru elite heavy infantry, and 4 Talons of Heavy Infantry (or maybe 3, with one Talon of heavy Archers, the books aren't clear). Would I show the Realm Dragons broken down into Talons, so that I'd have 16 Talons of Heavy infantry, and 24 Talons of Medium infantry, along with the various supporting talons, (per Legion) line up against 10 Talons of Ashigaru, 40 Talons of Heavy Infantry, and their support, or would I have huge blocks of infantry (full Dragons) smashing into a thinner line (made up of Talons) and then getting enveloped by the smaller formations? What was the 'typical' formation size for the Roman Legions in the Early Imperial period? Did the Romans really run 500-man units on the battlefield, or did they break down into smaller formations? Lookshy only has 4 Field Forces (plus reserves), and usually deploys independent Dragons to trouble spots (as they live in a rather balkanized part of Creation), while the Realm has over 30 Legions spread all over creation, and recently sent 3 legions to battle a powerful Northern Warlord, the Bull of the North. By the fluff, there's no way that a Lookshy Field Force could lose to a Realm Legion. Lookshy has way too many magical arms and artifacts, not to mention vastly more siege weapons. I'm confused. How on earth would those two formations fight? |
