Hi there,
Appart from converting real battles into BFG, me and 2 friends of mine have an interest in naval combat, specially 20th century naval combat.
I would like to ask if anyone knows about these. Have you seen/playted/tested/written a naval game that is both easy to handly (ala BFG) and more or less realistic?
If the answer is no, we might try to convert the BFG system into a WWI and WWII game system, but the pain to do that is way syuperior than learning a new game system I suppose. After all we already play 10+ games
Cheers,
Xavi

The obvious candidate for a modern naval game is Harpoon. I have a (slightly) older version. It is complicated, so may not meet your requirements. You have to think about things like fuel levels for your aircraft, torpedo speeds, etc. I get the impression that it is not too slow to play when you get to know it well.

Thanks V for the confidence.
For fast and simple with lots of ships look into General Quarters. Look here to order
Strange Cargo Games
Now if you want mind numbing detail with rules to spare there is Clash of Arms. They are the maker of Harpoon and it's WWII, WWI, and Russo Japanese war derivatives.
Clash of Arms
Now I have played Clash of Arms and if my friends hadn't converted most of the work into a computer program it would be unplayable short on one or two ships.
Now on the equally complex side we have Seakrieg. Can't play midway with this one. But if you love detail...
Seekreig
There you go.

Hi Guys,
One word:
HARPOON!
I've also heard good things about the much simpler SHIPWRECK system...
Although I've only played TANKWRECK so far.
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

Thanks for the info
However, Harpoon might be too complicated. We are looking for a fast game like BFG, not to an overcomplex and extremely realistic system. If nothing comes up, we are likely to try to convert BFG into a WWI/WWII system since we like the mechanics. In fact I have already done some thinking on that while at work
ASo, shipwreck is a good system? Anyone know more details about that one?
Regards,
Xavi

I have never played it but it's made by the folks at Strange Cargo games. The first link I gave you there will have it.
TMP may have some more info.

Sounds like Shipwreck is the game you need.

Seems so. The reviews are OK, so I think I will order it. Converting the ships from BFG is being quite painful, ands specially designing pseudo-realistic rules for submarines, torpedoes and big guns (we thought lances were *too powerful* there so we were thinking about ways of changing them). Cheers
Xavi

Hi Mojarn,

It was OK... it worked and was functional, but I'm not sure I'd buy a copy although I did like it... still not sure though.
FFOT may be a better pick... still deciding. And I want to play a few more games before I pass judgment.

I prefer Tankwreck to MSH, but they are two very different beasts. MSH is essentially a strategic game on a tactical battlefield while Tankwreck is a much lower level tactical game. I prefer scaling at a lower level or just plain 1 to 1.
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak. | Well, it says in the website that Designed for a scale of 1 model = 1 platoon, TANKWRECK enables you to fight out Brigade level clashes quickly in just a few hours. | . MSH is on the scale 1 model/stand = 1 platoon.
