Good grief - I'd really like to know what class of laser it is... I'd bet it could easily cause permanent damage to the eyes. And you do have to hit the eyes, incidentally. And one thing not mentioned is that snow, fog, heavy rain and dust and smog would curtail its range and effectiveness too. Not to mention the glasses mentioned - not entirely correct, although this depends on the type of lasr used, but I'd bet silver or gold one-side viewing only coatings would reduce its effectivenes. It should also be quite expensive. .. ![]() |

I agree with you, van; I bet it can cause permanent eye damage. Glad to see the US government spending my tax dollars wisely. ![]() |

The weight of an M60?! ugh. 35+ pounds of pissed off flashlight? Gimme my 8oz Surefire 6P (or the pair of 9Ps I've seen mounted on a SWAT rifle) anyday. Powerguns are unreal. Where's my tank-mounted anti-satellite gun (shooting as soon as the satellite clears the horizon)? Hitting someone 3km away with a pistol? No problem. As long as there's nothing in the way for the bolt to dump all it's energy into (the only 'flaw' in the weapon), direct line of sight and light-swift makes for very dead aircraft. |

Yes, Chroma is essentially correct ... And now a reading from the "good book" - " They worked on the principle that metallic atoms of fixed linear magnetic orientation could be converted directly into energy by the appliation of heat, pressure and intersecting magnetic fields. Powerguns used cartridges of copper-cobalt aligned in a wafer of microporous polyurethane. Powerguns released a flash of energy and plasma that struck in straight lines at light speed." ![]() |

Heh. A lot of money to find a safe version of what they already had. The US caused a stir a while back leading to the article mentioned article (basically I think as an extension to the St Petersburg convention which the US I believe is a part of) when they had a box that was designed to clip under the rifle causing blindness. It used the eyes ability to concentrate light to essentially burn out the retina. Used non visible spectrum too. terrified lots of people around the world (the public line was what if a terrorist got one and used it on a street of civilians - people all around you would be screaming as one by one they go blind but there is no sign of an attacker/the private line was US actions against people they didn't like). So out trundles the convention. Interesting to see the size difference in the two protypes. |
