My biggest game was a 12k game pitting my marines against my friends IG. It was pretty cool, but it was also like the third game we ever played ![]() We have talked about our next big game, only this time reducing the number of formations to make it faster(ie, 1 marine company is just one formation). How big was your biggest game? Did it work well? Was it fun? |

6000 points (SM1) Eldar vs. SMs IIRC, took two days (Standard Terran days, actually about 10-11 hrs. over two days !) ... ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I did a 20k a side game of SM/TL years ago, but to be honest it wasnt run terribly well (I was 12 at the time), so doesnt really count. I did a 10k game of E:A not that long ago that was cool, Eldar against Guard (both my armies, and I commanded the Eldar). Having 3 Phantom Titans in the force was cool, although having two Vampires loaded with aspects shot down by Hydras was not :O ![]() ![]() The Eldar won that particular game (Guard had no troops in the Eldar half, and the Eldar controlled all thier objectives), and all told it took around 6 hours to play 3 turns from setup to packup. I, and my opponent both enjoyed it. |

Hi! I have continuously and successfully run very large games at cons and stores back in my "crusading" days. My first was a 25k per side game of Imperials versus and ork and chaos alliance. It was at a Con, so many people participated (at least 4 per side) and was run in the course of 5-6 hours. I refereed it to keep it moving along. It was a marginal Imperial victory. I ran serveral 30k per side game in the interim. The largest was my last "public" appearance. A 40k per side game of Imperials versus Tyranids. It was setup the night before at the store and played the next day. HUGE game, massive casualties. The Imperials won a decisive victory. Primarch |

The largest game I've played was a SM/TL 25.000 point game... or should I say slaughter. There wan't really enough room on the board to manouver. With the board size I have available I think roughly 10.000 (give or take a couple of thousand) is about right for an Epic feel yet room enough to manouver and a game which can be completed in decent time. In E:A 6000 point is the biggest so far. Since I think these rules are more interesting the more room you have to manouver I wouldn't go above 10.000 points on a standard table. Cheers! ![]() |

10K for EA. Larger for epic40k. Board size becomes a problem - 6' across is about the max you can have a board and still be able to reach the centre comfortably. Then you just have to keep extending the frontage. I don't like the idea of just cramming more and more troops onto a small board - they just become arty fodder. I have recently been giving consideration to some rules conventions for larger games (over 10k size in EA). I came to the conclusion, that to speed things along the most obvious change is exactly what Jow suggested - up the command level so that your orders are issued to companies rather than individual detachments (to use the Space Marine terminology). ?Ie when you choose formations they each consist of 2-4 normal formations, plus maybe allow a certain number of normal size formations (eg one per double sized formation). Terminology for new formations 'brigaded' together to form double, triple or quadruple size formations could be something like the following: Marine detachments - brigaded to form a Company. Guard companies - brigaded to form a Regiment, supports brigaded to form a company. Ork Warbands - Brigaded to form a Horde. Eldar Hosts and Troops (not sure ![]() Chaos - (not sure). Tyranids - This is where things get a bit wierd, I guess the only things you could brigade are the synapse broods and independent formations! Tau and Necrons - not sure what you'd call these either. |

Hi! I agree with the table size limitations. I would not play more than 10k on a standard table. All my mega battles were played on 2-4, 6x4 foot tables. You just cant play games at that size with one table, unless you use some sort of reinforcement scheme. Primarch |

Yeah, the table size limitations make sense. I did 10k on a 8'x4', and there was enough room on that (although neither army was especially swarm heavy). I plan on lining up a load of 8'x4' boards for any bigger games (if they ever happen), and have 16'x4' or even 24'x4' ![]() For E:A, one issue I was worried about was the objectives. In 10k it seemed OK, as it just meant there was a nice meaty number of troops going for the objectives, as opposed to small remnants of units as often seems to occur in my smaller games. In 20+k, that could get interesting as you have sufficient forces to probably see every objective on the board contested. Of course, thats were Titans would come into their own ![]() Markconz, the moving companies/regiments sounds interesting. Im not sure its needed for speed of play (the actual order giving in E:A is pretty quick, is moving and rolling attack dice which takes time), but it could be very nice from a flavour point of view. Could lead to some hideous close combats too ![]() One thing Id thought of, was related to having multiple commanders per side. Each commander has, say, 5k, and when its one sides activation, each of its commanders gets to activate as normal (so, 20k, 4 lots of activations). So basically, if they coordinate their activities between them, they can perform some very deadly manouvres, but they still have their own objectives and goals to dissuade them from doing that (if that makes sense?). If that actually worked, it could be really cool. Its actually enthusing me to give it a go... Another idea based on that, is have a supreme commander who can allow 2 of his 4 commanders to activate each time his side has its activation, then you have even more rivalry between the sides... Sorry for the rambling post, big games have been something I have wanted to try more of for a while (just wish there were more than 3 people who actually played round here ![]() |

The largest game I ever played was back in my school days using the SM/TL rules. I organised a game which we held in my school hall during a half term holiday. I know the Ork army totalled 92,000points as it was at the prime of my collecting and I fielded the whole force. I think the Imperials had slightly more ![]() Participants were charged entry with the money going to charity (we had to think of some way of convincing the school to let us use the hall!). Over 50 individuals took part throughout the 4 days it ran. There was no limit on the "table" size since we were playing acros the floor - if you wanted to drive 30 feet out into the plains of the hall you could, but the unit would be useless for the rest of the game! I dont have anywhere near enough figures to organise such an event these days, but I'd love to take part in another mega-game one day. |

Primarch, when you do (I have no doubts you will) can I request pictures? That would just look so impressive. It could be something really good to arrange for epicomms meetups (werent we gonna have one of those in the UK? I aint spotted any news on that, but have I missed it?). And Tuffskull, you are one scary man ![]() |

Big games for big men! My biggest was 15k of Chaos v Imperial (mixed IG/SM/TL) on a 8 x 6 board in SM2 days. Indeed it was a slaughterfest and the Blood God was pleased! ![]() Anything bigger ceratinly needs multiple Commanders. I played a bigger sclae game (but not Epic) which ha dvarious players in Command of sections of the Front, each brioefing the Overall Commander who has units in Reserve (and Commnders to play them) and committed them as he saw fit. It was good to see real military style begging for more resources and some hard decisions being made. Chaos - (not sure). |
