State of Specialist Games

After spending some time in the forums late last week it made me realise it was probably about time we put something down in writing to explain where we are with our support and what we have planned for the future. It?ll also give me a chance to address some points that were raised in the forum.

1) Updating the blog ? At the beginning of 2005 we did try a daily update but the fact is that in our little niche news isn?t generated on a daily occurrence. This led to amusing but vacuous updates about the state of coffee in Bugman?s, why the ad breaks on Channel 4 seem to be longer than any other channel?s etc. So we realised that it would be best to only update the blog when there was something to actually write about. At the very least there will always be a weekly update with the arrival of Fanatic Online.

2) Specialist Game Model Releases ? It is very true that new releases have been thin on the ground recently. That?s not to say there aren?t any new releases - we have plenty and there is a budget for many more new sculpts.

We now have a global release plan (with the exception of Australia) which will start in February, with the Epic Feral Orks and Thorian Inquisitor and a few others (more details shortly). As I?ve described before Specialist Games will now have two release windows a year, these have currently been set at February and August time. Each release window will have a mixture of new releases for the Specialist Games and be scheduled in such a way so that all the games get a fair share and at least one of the games gets a ?major release? per window.

3) Where?s Jervis? ? As a highly experienced and veteran member of the studio Jervis has been busy working on numerous projects, the Specialist Games? continued support being one of them. Rumours that Jervis is bound up and chained to my cellar wall are not true (for one thing, I don?t have a cellar). The running of the website, our main customer interface, is now down to me - whilst Jervis? work is more ?behind the scenes? so to speak. Having said that he?ll still be about at events and no one can keep Jervis away from his keyboard for long!

4) Printed media ? Currently all our planned support material for the games will be via the website and free PDF files. This is a boon for the customers as it means all such support is now free! That is not to say we?ll never use print again simply that GW has decided on a different - and admittedly, more cost-effective - format to present such material. We reach far more gamers in this medium, as an example, over 300,000 people visit this webpage a month, Fanatic magazine had a print run of 12,000. It also allows us to re-present projects and games that we would never be able to viably print again. I?m still working on this at the moment but expect to see Bommerz Over Da Sulphur River being just the first in a new ?games vault? area of the website coming soon.

I do agree that PDFs can be somewhat intangible and are not always a true replacement for a printed book. One of Jervis? many projects he is currently working on is researching print-on-demand technologies (don?t expect to see anything on the website for a while yet). White Dwarf will also continue to support the Specialist Games to a lesser degree; I?m currently working on a series of Mordheim articles with Nick Kyme.

So, in summary - Games Workshop is continuing to support the Specialist Range of games via an active website which holds a large bank of articles ? added to on a weekly basis, free online rulebooks that are updated and corrected every other year, hosts a vibrant online community and has two release periods a year to add new models to the range.

And that?s not all; in the forthcoming weeks I?ll be explaining how the sales divisions are continuing there support of our games with the use of the popular Specialist Games catalogues. More on that soon.

For now,
Andy @ Fanatic

When I read that, my first thought was, "Oh boy, is Tas going to be mad."

I wonder what the release date for Oz will be?

its kinda like, what the natives are getting restless? Throw them a bone or something, make some sympethetic noises and some vague promises they'll buy into it.
thats mostly how I read it anyway.

Hi!

Sometimes I wish I was as ignorant as a "native". It wouldnt bother me so much.

The natives are restless we're on the freakin' warpath.

I'm gonna go head hunting soon....

At lest we have some official comment and update - even though it's pretty much the first since the reorganisation.

I'm still in the believe it when I see it camp but I have a good six month backlog of models to work through before I start buying again so lack of new releases doesn't bother me and there is enough game support and development going on here to keep me going for a while so I can afford to wait.
