So having been trying to max out the effectiveness of marines in EA I ended up using 'tactical' battle groups like the following.

Two tac detacments, 1 assault, and 1 devastator detachment. One of the tac detachments has a captain, the assault marines have a chaplain, and sometimes a Librarian is included. It just seems to give a nice combination of units for just about any situation.

Suddenly it clicked - the effective battle groups I've been using are perfect standard codex 'battle companies!! ?(OK ok.... its been a long while since I even looked at the fluff...! ?:p ).

Well it shows something is working right... :D

Mind you - its another reminder of how ridiculously small these marine chapters are... ? :80:

This is the kind of thing that actually inspires me, as it points out the fact that the fluff is actually sensible and logical - which I like. Now, can you get other organisations to work...

yes they are! 2 x 6 stand dets + 1 x 4 stand det + 1 x 4 stand det = 20 stands = 10 squads = 100 Marines.

Nice.

Sadly, it doesnt work so well if you want to build Codex Assault, Devestator or Tactical companies though....:(

I get the impression from the fluff that squads from the reserve companies tend to be partialled out as needed rather than being deployed together all at once.

If you did deploy them all at once, you'd have to take either 90 or 120 marines for the tactical reserve companies, but you could take 5 detachments (100 marines) for the assault, dev, or scouts for the other companies :)

I can't see myself wanting to deploy 5 scout detachments together very often :)

Hi!

Tactically it would make sense to partial them out as needed.

But us ol' gitz just love those 'ol specialist companies. :;):

Real-life military organizations are full of examples of administrative companies which do not fight in company size. E.g. WWII-era German Infantry Battalions had MG companies, which didn't fight together, but their platoons were split to the line companies.

For some reason, SM-era fluff and the game itself had specialist companies.

The current fluff still has them under the Chapter organisation of 10 companies.

Yes the more specialised ones can be parcelled out, but they are standng companies and would be deployed in BBarges and SCruisers as such. ?Well, logic doesnt really apply to GW fluff and you can bend your head trying to make it fit!

As did Finnish Infantry battalions. IIRC there were three infantry companies and one MG company in a battalion. Each platoon of the MG company would usually be attached to a infantry company but in special cases one company coud get two platoons.

Try to build a battlecompany from the Salamanders chapter...they have 12 squats in each company.
7 tactical squats, 2 assault squats and 3 devastator squats.
This does not really fit with E:A rules.

BL - if you REALLY want those, just chop down the formation sizes and reduce their price proportionately!

Assura is correct again, and I have no problem with special dets. (but we have to be careful when we say "real world" ... some guyz ... ge ... get ... scared!) ! ? I'm still a fan of the SM1/SM2 MTO&Es (w/mods) for SMs, IG, Ork, Squats(Demi's Ancestors!) and Chaos/Cultist (L&D) plus Eldar with considerable re-working. ?Tas has some of my MTOE's so he is aware of what I speak ... ?That being said, I generally like the T&K TO&Es ( :alien: ) and will make some modified versions that fit with our "hybrid" Epic system (which I may get post here ?!), ? ?that now strongly draws from E:A (about 85-90 %). ?But I generally do not like the E:A Armies Lists, scenario generation (AT1/SM1 is still the best IMO!), etc. ? But for the most part, E:A is their best Epic attempt, IMO ! ? ?Oh ... I almost forgot ?!!? :o0 ? My 'Nids are all SIB (since SM2 !!?!?!), still awaiting a Bug List/rules that works/appeals for/to me ... ? ?

Hi!

I think they should probably just give guidlines towards how to make an SM company and leave up to people how many and how the company is composed.
