For most holidays and events, I try not to get too involved. However, remembrance Sunday is something that I feel strongly about - both personally and in respect of this site. I do feel that, as a web site devoted to wargames, including forays into 'modern war' games, we should not forget the horror which lies behind the games that we play. The 'modern generation' are always being criticised for taking the world in which we live for granted, and so I also feel that we should never forget the sacrifice made by so many - from people belonging to many countries and who fought in many of the conflicts which shaped our world. This thread is an opportunity for all of us here to post our thoughts, along with any links to relevant web sites, not just in the UK or with the Second World War. Please keep this thread respectful. This is not about the cause of conflict, or blame, but a way to prove that as a sector of this generation, we are able to appreciate the acts and sacrifice of others, and that we do not put a gloss on these events. I will kick off this thread with a link - The Poppy Appeal The sale of poppies in the UK is used firstly to collect money for veterans of the major wars, and also to keep the memory of the sacrifice alive. To all veterans, I salute you, and thank you. |

A moment of silence for all who have fallen in the line of duty.... I would like to give my most sincere thanks to all veterans, especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, for defending the way of life that I do take for granted on occasion. |

La L?gion royale canadienne / The Royal Canadian Legion http://www.cbc.ca/news.... Canada Canada's poppy (a bit different to the one in the UK) ![]() Nous n'oublions jamais/Lest we forget. (In Canada, the day is not just for veterans of the First and Second World Wars: It's to commemmorate those who have served as 'casques bleues' in UN peacekeeping missions around the world - to which Canada has contributed significantly for over half a century) And in Ireland we have also formally served as casques bleues - and informally as soldiers, sailors, pilots and factory workers in the Second World War: (Ireland and the Second World War) And we were around in the First one, too - though it's a touchy subject here for some (as is the involvement in the second, for that matter) Gary Edited by Nerroth on 10 Nov. 2005 (19:52) |

In Finland the Veteran's day (kansallinen veteraanip?iv? lit. national veteran's day) is 27. April; the Lapland war (and thus the WWII for Finland) ended 27. April 1945. The sad thing is the Veteran's Day has only been in existence since 1987. ![]() |
