Post subject:  QUESTION: Are you a hoarder or a collector?

Hi Guys,

------

Primarch brings up an interesting question:

*** Are you a hoarder or a collector? ***

------

Darkone AKA Doug represents a collector:

Nah, it's what I like about this hobby... finding little treasures like this...
I feel like a big kid all over again! :D
It's Christmas come early.
Actually I would be just happy that this little gem is won by one of us and then photographed!

Collectors are most interested in building up a collection of "one of everything." They particularly delight in finding copies of rare and "hard-to-get" items such as the original painted miniatures featured in contests or magazines, the prototype sculpts or just plain oddball items related to the game.

Collectors love seeing photographs of miniature lines and delight in knowing the histories of miniatures. Collectors also tend to be generous and if they have more than one of a piece, they're usually willing to trade with a fellow collector to help them complete their collection.

As a side note, most scratch-builders seem to be collectors who found a way around getting those "hard-to-get" items, they REMAKE THEM as their own original creations!

------

Primarch represents a hoarder:

Quote (primarch @ 17 2005 Aug.,22:19)
Me, as a hoarder, getting lots for a little is my way. ?:;):

Hoarders are about numbers. They want to build up the largest collection possible and have "bragging rights." :)

Hoarders love any chance they can get to show off their collection including playing those mythical games of 100,000 plus points that require the floorspace of entire gymnasiums to play on! :D

Hi!

Hoarder!

I once long ago, actually DID have one of everything. But to me, it wasnt very satifying.

One is such a small number...

...unless followed by lots of zeros!

I like the mass effect of hordes of figures. Epic lends itself to this greatly. The problem for me in collecting is how may of those rare minis I can get to realize a mass effect? Too few for my tastes.

While rhinos, land raiders and other such models are a dime a dozen, thats exactly why I love them, because I CAN get many of them.

Collector... I have 1 or 2 Dets of most Epic from all eras and for 9+ Epic Armies! ?

Of course Raiders, Rhinos, Mk.1 Falcons, Ork B/W, etc., I have "Beacoup" of those! :D :;):

Somewhere inbetween I think, and Master of None!

I have largish collections (my definition, not P's definition!) of what I like, but enjoy a variety of gaming genres too much to dedicate myself (temporally, spacially and finacially!) to a single game in order to get EVERYTHING ever made.

I have some rare bits that I really liked or wanted and greatly appreciate the amazing collections of both Darkone and P, but dont come near to par with either. ?:)

Post subject:  QUESTION: Are you a hoarder or a collector?

Hi Guys,

I am most definitely a collector with the proviso that I'm a collector that likes to use the collection. I couldn't stand owning a collection if I couldn't use it like people that collect baseball cards or comic books and never remove them from their package... they have to stay hermetically sealed in a  plastic bag because they would be devalued if an actual human being touched them. For me, part of the joy of owning the collection is seeing the collection getting used and serving its purpose (to have a good time).

Like others, I enjoy the  tactical and strategic challenges of gaming as well as getting caught up in the fantasy of a game's background. Much like Cybershadow, I really don't need more miniatures, but I like to have them because it give more battlefield possibilities and adds another small piece to the big picture of the fictional setting. My goal as collector is to collect one of each faction in a game rather than one of each piece.

In the case of Epic, I am collecting one of each faction except for chaos.

I have the following armies in painted, ready-to-play condition: Huge Eldar army, Space Wolf SM army, Blood Angel SM army, Ultramarine SM army, Squat army, three different IG armies, Space Skaven army, Necron army and three different Ork armies.

I have a Dark Angel SM army army that needs a lot of work, some Ork armies from the tribes I haven't readied yet, some IG minis that need work and plans fro some of the other forces such as the Sisters, some of the other special Imperials forces, and a long-time dream to build an IG Beastman force. I drew up plans for one of the earlier Epic Golden Demons and painted everything but the Beastmen infantry themselves! I also have a Necron force that I've been slowly adding to including a Monolith sculpt that I hope to learn how to mold and cast.

I'm not against the hoard-master giant mondo games (100,000 points plus), but I prefer smaller games of 10,000 or less points. The game takes too long with many more than 10,000 points.

I also know that I'm a collector because I'd rather build a quality force with a variety of models (common and uncommon ones as well as rares) rather than a massive quantity force of the easiest-to-acquire and most common models. When I can use nearly every choice on an army list then I figure I have a good collection. Legions of Landraiders and Devastator troops don't do it for me. I'm not a great fan of min/max'ers. I like to have the near useless robots, Mole Mortars, Tarantulas and Rapiers on my side. If I've got to lose the shirt off my back, I want to do it in style! :D

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

I am a collector as Maksim says, but I hoard a little too.  I have loads of stuff for epic and its just the time I need to find to paint it all.

I have sprues and metal all over the place for all the armies but I am concentrating on the Tau and some Space Marines.  Hopefully in the end I will have everything painted and usable in epic games.

Only the rare items are not used but my painted stuff is and when I can they travel with me to London to have a game or two.

I'm probably somewhere in between as well though I do have some hoarder tendencies.
My armies does contain a number of rarities and sometimes in largeish numbers (such as 3 Mk2 Warlords - Hey, I need a proper Battlegroup you know... :p  ).
Much of it hasn't been painted yet but I aim for a relatively high quality paint job on most of my stuff. Of course that means that when you paint everything yourself it does take a lot of time :D

Like Primarch I think the look of a massive collection of minis is simply amazing. However when you paint yourself you can't paint everything to a top standard this way. This is where the "special pieces" come in. These can be rare models, conversions, scratch builds etc. but basically stuff which you put a lot more heart into. Trust me - It is only fun to paint that many Beetlebacks before you want to do something else... Unique models on the other hand you can really go overboard with and make truely ...well unique...

Cheers! :)

That clinches it for me: I game for fun, and a laugh is most welcome; and I model for fun too, and painnting 10,000 beards on Squats is aaaaaargh!
So I'm definitely a very irregular collector, but only in a limited sense (I wish I could have it all, but can't afford the time and space). And so I make my own rare stuff myself - give me wirdo conversions any day. :D  :D  :D

cheers all,
John, still inordinately proud of the Tzeentch hula dancer conversion.....  :p

Post subject:  QUESTION: Are you a hoarder or a collector?

Hmmmm, I guess I would be a collector though there is an aspect of hoarding (curtailed by lack of space). I'm not particularly interested in having one of everything (though it would be nice), more in the way of having a couple of well rounded armies with a few interesting pieces. It's really the painting and modeling aspect that appeals to me rather than either collecting or hoarding.

Post subject:  QUESTION: Are you a hoarder or a collector?

I think I would actually call myself a hoarder. What I enjoy most is HUGE piles of figures, often the same ones (I seem to be able to motivate myself to actually paint large numbers of the same models). Of note are the 300 bases of painted guardsmen I own, which is the first 3 companies of what I hope will eventually be an entire regiment of 10 companies  :l  , and 150 bases of painted beastmen, which I suspect will keep growing until I stop finding figures.

But I do own the figures to game. This weekend is a 10K game with my Guard on one side and either my Chaos or Eldar on the other (I suspect Eldar, as I havent tried using 3 Phantoms in one game before   :O ). No-one else I know really has figures, which is also a motivator. Big games , while unwieldy as you say Maksim, are what motivate me, I do most of my painting after games, because Im still on a high...

I do have collector elements, such as my (nearly completed) 3000 points of Harlequins, including Mimes, converted characters, Venoms and Death Jesters. But really, this is just an extension of the hoard thing I think (the Harleys I have probably constitute several Masques, which is a tad pointless).

And yes, I know some of the numbers above aint impressive for you Primarch-types (an Primarch himself of course :D ), but they feel like a fair hoard to me...

Mostly hoarder, but I do like to have unique items or hard to find stuff.  I've wrangled trades for just a few pieces in order to have them for collector purposes.

Hmm. Somewhere in between, but closer to a collector than hoarder. Although I do admit I have rather many superheavies for my IG.  Once a treadhead, always a treadhead.

In the gamer-painter axis I'm definitely in the gamer end. If I could I'd follow Primarch's example and let other, more capable painters, do my armies for me.  :;):

In the end, thats the only important yardstick. ?I too think I have a fair load of stuff, but its insignificnat compared to some. ?Then again, I find pleasure in knowing that I painted every dang one of them.

'The Master' himself has discussed his passion for collecting more than a few times, and the sacrifices he has made to accumulate the P-load. ?I cant or wont make some of them, but Im happy with what I have.

Wont stop me buying more though.... :p

Most people will be between to two extremes of Primiarch and Darkone, but will have a tendancy to one side or the other as we've seen from the posts already  This is an interesting read to see where everyone lies on that curve!

Post subject:  QUESTION: Are you a hoarder or a collector?

Neither. I don't have money to hoard miniatures (altough I'm trying to build a cache of parts - that will be quickly depleted, though - and it's hard to refrain myself from opening more boxes then just Skeletons and Storm Claws), and I definitely don't enjoy collecting special rare miniatures. Converting special unique miniatures of my own design is a different thing, naturally...

Post subject:  QUESTION: Are you a hoarder or a collector?

I guess I'm somewhere in between. I'm not really a collector in the sense that I'm looking for those are or unique items. Nor am I a hoarder, primarily becasue I don't have the money, but also because I feel do need to acquire tons purely for the sake of having a ton.

Granted, I do want more, but the number is based on game considerations. I almost have at least one of every detachment for SM2. If I want more of something I already have, it's because after playing a game with only one detachement of something, say hellhounds for example, I realize it would be nice to have another. I'm not looking to field Primarch-sized armies all at once, but in the course of collecting one of everything, my armies have gotten large without me aiming for a specific point total.

On the other hand, sometimes it won't pass up a bargain. I once bought 3 Squat Colossi because I bought them for $2 each. Lately I've been bidding on things on ebay, becasue if I win at my max bid, it would be a good deal.

So, I guess I'm like Maksim. I want to be able to field all of those "useless" minis for the sake of variety.   :p  :D
