Hi all,
the less challenged in memory of you will remember that some time in January a passing comment (one of those dangerous ones which should come with a warning sign, '$$$') led Tas (out on the wild blue at the moment - cheers mate) and myself to actively take an interest in the Aeronef rules. An Aeronef, you should know, is a heavier than air airship kept aloft by means of some anti-gravity device, or massive engines of some sort; although you get a lot of dirigibles and balloony machines too. The rules are published by a small and friendly company, Wessex Games. It's nice to order direct from the designer and proprietor. cottage industries are grand! ?

The game is set in the very late Victorian period , reaching up to around WW1, and is inspired by books like The First Men on the Moon and The Master of the World. I've always loved this sort of wondrous flying machine business, and attracted by ?a Man o' Warish feel (no doubt Tas' marine inclinations were similarly tickled) I'd ordered a handful of vessels and the rules ?plus an extension.

Well, they're not here yet, but I'd known they wouldn't because a few of the models were awaiting recasting, and I'd said I'd wait. But now they're due to be shipped soon, and the excitement is mounting! ?:D Although I know of other manufacturers of models for the game, I'd stuck to the Wessex models this time round, to limit shipping costs, but also to support the game designers, which I think is only fair. Anyway, I like their models too, so.....
I decided to go for the Mediterranean scene (no surprises there) and have invested in some French vessels. With a smidgeon of uncharacteristic common sense, I selected a mixed lot of vessels (which I liked) from different nations which will become a Turkish fleet, with an American design purchased by the Turks, a Russian one captured, and a German one donated by the Germans in order to lead the Turks to an alliance. I'm dreaming of building a few land and air forts too. Time, as usual, will dictate events.

I'll try to review the rules and stuff when they get here, which won't be for some time. But this looks fun!
Huzzah! ?:D ?:D

I'll look forward to that. The game sounds interesting. I've allways loved Jules Verne's books ever since I read some old cartoon (is that thee right word?) versions as a kid. Robur Rocks :D

Cheers! :)

Pics, ok. Battle reps - well, I'll have to convince someone from around here to try it out - I think I'm the only Maltese buying this game - so far, anyway!
ANd yes - Robur DOES rock!  :D

Hi all,
there's been a delay due to mould troubles, but the order is being prepared for delivery - Huzzah! This is something totally different from my GW staple, and I'm quite excited abut it.

I actually had a quick look through this rule set at Salute a few weekends ago, and was reminded of your quest. A review of the game would be very interesting. Thanks.

Dang. I read that as Aeronaff. Had images of Slaaneshi aircraft in pink and pale green polka dots...

Great to see the keen spirit of Aeromobiling lives Vanvlak!

I have read and re-read my well thumbed rules in my bunk at sea and designed fleets of 'digs and 'nefs that upon reflection exceeded the Tas Defence Aquisition udget many times over.  Its seems the family tax rate will have to go up to support this colony's defences!  Nere'tless, a purchase of predominantly Russian, French and Bitish Nefs is imminent (mold availability pending)...

The Aquanef rules will be good too - thinks ame sort of Vernian era...but Nautilis, 20,000 leagues under the sea with giant squids, attack divers in bell helmets, etc - cool!

Need to find time to paint and play though...
I look forward to seeing pics of your aerial fleet once they arrive V!

Yours in a magnificent flying machine
Tas

Hi Tas,
knew you'd bite! I'm planning a very Mediterranean scene, with French and Turkish fleets initially - followed by Italians and British. The Turks will be a mix of vessels provided by nations bordering Turkey or wishing to influence it - I'm copying WW1 history here, with the Germans providing ships...

Hang on - did you really say Aquanef ? ! ? :( :) :D

Oh yes I Did!

You gotta keep up with the goss: http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/WGVSF/

From Steve Bliss (game designer)
"Aquanef is our long promised set of VSF submarine rules. The background
is the same as Aeronef and the reason for the submarine development is
to obtaion more R-Matter from the ocean floor. Of course the only aliens
are not those found in space and inspired by the H G Wells story 'In The
Abyss' there are aliens at the bottom of the ocean. The science (like
Aeronef) is drawn from the period so expect Griffith style underwater
searchlights etc rather than sonar...

The game is based on the Aeronef system but does differ, least of all by
the inclusion of a depth system that restricts just how deep your
aquanef can go. Overall the feel is that it is more detailed than
Aeronef and a player would handle 3 to 4 ships a side normally.

The models are still up in the air (so to speak). The human ships will
be based early submarine designs, including fictional ones like Le
Vengeur. The alien ships concept is being debated at the moment by the
WG team. The game also includes diver units (a la Robida), as well as
sea-bed crawling craft, undersea forts and creatures...

There is no direct link games-system wise between Aeronef and Aquanef,
though I would like to do something in any possible supplement for
Aquanef to include ASW operations.

Hope this whets the appetite - I've got a week off soon to get cracking
on the scenery and models (I have what I think is a cool idea for the
look that hopefully will come off - more on this if it does).

Steve"

And doesnt that ASW bit in the 2nd last para just scream out for me to do it.... :p

For more Aquanef inspiration, here is a link to H.G., Wells's 'In the Abyss':
