Hi guys,

I thought I would just say that although I havent been around much I am still around.  Being busy working, painting and arranging private stuff in the UK hasnt left me much time for forum reading.  Maybe that will change of the course of time but at least I am still trying to keep up with the main stuff.

The painting blog I had started it behind by a month but so far I have only painted some bits for Fanatic.  I am still trying to fit some time in for the new Tau units and progressing with the Dark Angels.

Incoming has started again and with the help of WN we can ensure that it doesnt suffer.  I will attempt to make articles from what I paint because they will be army force scale and arrange some time to meet up with Tom to use the new units painted for battle reports.

I am still busy arranging stuff and that is for another time, but suffice to say Real life has caught up with me so I will be around on and off.

Doug

and I have started piranhas and soon the tetras depending on how much I can get done over the next couple of days.

Over the next few days I am actually at home so I will still be around and maybe the occasion where we go out to enjoy the nice weather we have at the moment. ?Then Friday night we fly out to London for a week with my sister and her kids.

I should be painting but it will be LoTR stuff as I promised to paint some with my Nephew. ?I should be around but I cant guarantee it.

What do people think about basing vehicles?  Some seem to look ok but I am still uncertain, and whats more it sometimes looks better when vehicles are moving up a street without a base attached....

I prefer to leave my vehicles unbased. For static display, vehicles do look better based, but for me they're more fuctional game-wise unbased, kind of what you mentioned about them driving up streets. The other reason I don't base my vehicles is for a practical reason: I would rather spend my time painting more minis rather than bases.

Base them, but son't glue them to the base....
I tend not to base vehicles permanently, with a Tyrannic exception.
Great work Doug! :D :D :D

I am following fashion and basing... means that the base is held rather than the model!

But it's a bit of a pain when photographing the models.

Dont base! Dont base!

Takes up time that could be spent painting, plus most importnatly it doesn't look as good on the table where it counts. I've long since debased all my vehicles (except the eldar which are on flying bases).

BTW those DH and Tau look great! :D

A good idea not to base them but rather have them loose.  Unfortunately I havent done that for the Dark Angel vehicles nor the Ravenguard ones I have.

I must admit the few answers I got did get me thinking(oh dear !).  Whats the difference between a base on a Titan and a vehicle base?  I mean both would look odd if you have green grass on the bases and a snowy battlefield.  Likewise for the infantry, so what makes basing good and bad?

Jimbo's comment about the base handled rather than the model is true enough and really helps prevent the underside of vehicles to not get scratched up.

I myself find that a base gives a bit of character.  The time taken to paint these is really up to you.  The flying base for the Piranha only took about 5 mins max.

The thing about driving them up streets like little cars, well thats the only thing that would disturb me because it looks wrong, though the infantry has the same problem.  Especially with square or rectangle bases.  I found for the Tau 2 pence pieces as bases for certain troop formations helped them to look more realistic in formation, I suppose it would work for the tyranids as well.

For me, the difference between Titans and vehicles is a matter of balance. Vehicles don't tip over easily. Also, Infantry has to be based.

Havent really had much time to paint while in London and epic will only start when I get back on Sunday.

As for the basing I think I will stick to the idea of basing the Dark Angels since I have already started and then from there on I will continue to do bases and leave them loose for models to be placed on for photos.

At least I know what to do with the Tau vehicles.  Only the piranhas will look strange because the base needed to be glued on.  There is no hole for the flyer stand.  I think the Tetra is the same :(

Normally I used this blog to show what I have done lately and so far progress has been slow. However I do have some pics of stuff that I found while collecting epic.

History:
I think I had first discovered epic when I was 16 and couldnt afford it as yet though through friends I did get hooked into Space Crusade. ?Once I did start buying epic I was quickly sucked in by the older editions and fluff surrounding it. ?Before long I was chatting with Tuffskull about trying to find all the pieces ever released for the game.

There are many pieces I cant show but here are some I have photgraphed for the moment of stuff I stumbled on.

This book had the excellent piece from Dale Hurst, and via a contact I found it and just had to buy it

If anyone likes epic pictures for ideas or what people did back when Space marine was popular than I would definately recommend this book. ?Its amazing just how many pictures there are of epic stuff

The piece can also be seen in White dwarf 115

Hi Doug,

Maksim,

The Leman Russ was released in the U.K. though at the time wasn't popular. It was in the UK catalogue around Titan Legion era. Not sure of the US but its definitely not a promo or anything. I think the same applied for the Exodites, prototype Eldar fliers and the Imperial Dropship. The U.S. got them and we in the UK didn't. Strange how that was but like I say they were readily available.

Doug.

The funny thing is that I have the US catalogue from that time and the LR Recovery tank isn't in the US catalogue.

I tried to order some at the time (Learned from Brits about it) and GW-US told me that they wouldn't be released in the US.

Thanks for the information.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.
