My fantastic gf managed to pick me up one of the new PS2 slimline, ready for internet, gaming PS2 consols for a combined birthday/Christmas. So, I am trying to wind down after a seriously rough week by playing Return of the King, Transformers and Midnight Club II. But, I am looking for advice on some of the best games out there.

Perhaps I am getting old, but it seems like 90% of the games are pretty much the same, just with different pictures. Add to this the fact that I am not your typical gamer, and it is difficult to get inspired about the games available.

I am a fan of strategy games mostly, but I dont want to buy hundreds of games. So, I thought that I would try to find the best games of each type, to give myself a selection.

If anyone can recommend games of the types below, and why they are cool, then that would really help:
Strategy (any type, but robot games are always cool!)
Flight (action, not sim)
Arcade (R-Type, etc)
Platform
Race/Driving

Thanks.

Hmmm... If you haven't tried it, I think Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic would be cool. I have the PC version but it's one of the few PC games which I don't think would be harder to play on a console. I'm pretty sure it is available for PS2.
Apart from that I'm pretty much blank (I've been playing Total War Rome and Panzers Phaze one a lot recently so I'm completely brainwashed)

Cheers! :)

Hi,

Not sure if SW:KOTOR is available for PS2. I know the Microsoft X-Brick has it though.

As for PS2 games:

Ace Combat 3: Distant Thunder (and Ace Combat 4 which should be out soon) is best Flight action game out there. You should be able to pick AC3 up quite cheap too. Photorealistic and plenty of variety.

Arcade-wise, there are quite a few remakes and sequels of arcade games such as R-Type and Contra, etc. Just ask in a game shop and they should be able to find something. Beware of some of the "arcade collections" though.

Colin McRae 4 (rally) and Gran Turismo 3 (sim-street racing) are both great racing games. It really depends on which style of racing you want as to which games.

I would recommending picking up any PS2 mag actually (or flicking through one instore), as most have an index of their top 50 / 100 games that should give you some more ideas. Also a lot of stores have a 10 day (or more) return policy and trade ins, so you shouldn't have a problem swapping any bad purchases.

Cheers,
Freshmetal

Well, I have just discovered that Gran Tourismo IV has been pushed back until the beginning of 2005! I guess that I will have to wait for that. So, that is the driving games sorted out. I like the urban, supercar speed games. Any other suggestions?

Hi,

Need for Speed Underground and Midnight Club are the two major street racing franchises at the moment, but neither are really that deep. Although I'm not a fan of the "Urban" scene, so I might not be the best judge of either. :/

Gran Turismo 3 is on platinum now (?20 I think?) and is still great if you can't wait for number 4.

"Ring of Red" is a nice Robot/Mech strategy game that you might like if you can find it (it's a bit old). There are a few Mechwarrior and suchlike games about if you want a PC-style Mech game.

I've been playing Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas the past week or two which I can only recommend highly. Well any of the GTA games. :P

Cheers,
Freshmetal

Thanks for the tips. I am very tempted to get GTIII, but I know someone who has it, so I may only borrow it until IV comes out. I also already have Midnight Club II, which I am just getting into.

I will have a look out for Ring of Red. I have Zone of Enders, Armoured Core 2 and another one, as well as Transformers.

I have played Vice City, as my friend loves the series. Personally, I really dont like this type of game.

Well Tom. I just dug out Armoured Core 2. It starts off well. You can customise pretty much every aspect of your mech, select parts from list of those that you own, change the colour and even design the insignia! Maybe I am new at the game, but it is really difficult. The controls are really complicated, but they do allow you to do pretty much whatever you want. The problem that I have is that when the enemy get a lock on you, that is it. You simply cant get out of the way fast enough. I gave up after about 10 minutes.

In conclusion, the game has a steep learning curve. If you have the time to give it a good go, then it should be great. But, as a pick up and play, it doesnt work. It does have the potential to be a really good mech game, though. Hope that this helps.

I am now looking at Alien V Predator: Extinction. Anyone got this? Anyone played it?

Hi,

My advice: STAY AWAY from AvP:Extinction. Should've been called Ex-stink-tion. My brother bought it and I borrowed it for a day. It's clunky and doesn't give off any of the "Aliens" vibe at all. Although my brother thought it wasn't too bad (though he is notorious for having bad taste). It's like a badly-implemented RTS. You may like it, but possibly borrow/rent it first.

Cheers,
Freshmetal

Right, thanks for the warning. That one is now off the list. Are there any good review sites out there? The only two that I have found are the official Playstation site (trying to sell you stuff) and Amazon (fan boys).

I almost picked up the Mortal Kombat over the weekend. Luckily, common sense prevailed. I will get it later, and for less than ?40! (Amazon have it at ?27.) Anyway, instead I got Naval Ops: Warship Gunner. This is a nice little game. Control a destroyer, get out on the waves, blow up the enemy and customise your ship for the next mission. I am now looking at Goblin Commander, and Ace Combat IV.
