My son is going to turn five years old in a couple of months, so I've decided to get him hooked on lead.  I think I'll buy him a few miniatures, perhaps a space marine, a knight, a halfling, a princess, and a big robot.  Then we can sit and paint together, and play Kidhammer!
What is Kidhammer, you ask?  It's a very simplified version of Warhammer skirmish, which will hopefully be easy enough for a five-year-old to understand.  I spent well over an hour writing the rulebook!  I stripped all the detail and fluff away, and a good deal of the rules, too.  I pared it down to the absolute bare minimum.  Then I added back in multi-wound monsters.  Why?  Because they're too cool.

---  Kidhammer  ---

Materials needed for play:
A few miniatures
Some terrain
A play area or table
12" stiff range ruler
6" flexible movement tape or string
A few "Injury" counters
A six-sided die

Choosing your forces:
Regular models cost 1 point.  They are killed if they suffer one wound.
Monsters cost 2 points.  They must be wounded twice before they die.   You
may equip your models with weapons for 1 point per weapon.
Ranged weapons have a 12" range and wound on a roll of 5 or higher.   Hand
weapons can be used in close combat and wound on a roll of 4 or higher.

Setting Up:
Arrange the terrain in a mutually-agreeable manner
The highest-roller on a die may choose which side they want to set up on.
The other player set up on the opposite side.  Players then take turns,
starting with the player who chose their side, putting a miniature within
6" of their table edge.  When all of the miniatures are down, both players
roll a die.  The high-roller has inititative, and so goes first.  You're
ready to play!

A few basic rules:
Never move any of the terrain.  Never touch someone else's models.  Never
move your own model unless it's time to move it according to the rules.

The Turn:
During a player's turn, he does three things: Moves each of his models,
shoots with ranged weapons, and then fights in close combat.  Then it is
the other player's turn.

Movement:
Each model can move up to 6", and may go around obstacles or other models
of desired.  A model which is engaged in close combat cannot move until
there are no more enemy models touching it.

Shooting:
Each model may fire once per ranged weapon (up to a maximum of twice).
Use the 12" range ruler to determine if the target is within range.
Terrain and other models may block line of sight, making shooting
impossible.  Basically if any part of the target is obscured, it cannot be
shot at.  Targets are wounded on a roll of 5 or higher.

Close combat:
If a model it touching an enemy, it may make a close combat attack against
it.  If it has hand weapons, it may make one attack per hand weapon (up to
a maximum of two), which wound on a 4 or higher.  A model with no hand
weapons may still make one attack with its fists, which wounds on a roll
of 6.  Once a model comes into contact with an enemy, neither of them may
run away; it's a fight to the death!

When a regular model is wounded, remove it from the table or tip it on its side to represent its dead body.  When a monster is wounded for the first time, put a "Injury" marker on its base.  When a monster is wounded for the second time, treat it like any other killed model.

Ending the game:
The game ends when all of one player's models have been killed or have
fled off any table edge.

--- ---

Please let me know if you see any obvious flaws.  Are the weapons too lethal?  Not lethal enough?  Remember, the game needs to move quickly to keep up with a five-year-old's limited attention span.  What about the point values?  It seems a bit weird to have weapons cost the same as troops....  Thanks.   :)

Very good, just be aware that you will get 'interesting' games, characters occasionally wandering off, sudden 'my man is now superman' moments etc. Nevertheless an excellent start, do you mind if I utilise your rules for 'player expansion' (ultimatly doubling the player base to 2 :D )

Try Heroclix as well, that is good with the young'ens.

When I was younger, I played a home grown wargame with my dad, every model could move 10cm, every model hit on 4+, ranged troops could fire from 30cm.

Armour saves were.
Plate armour 4+
Chain armour 5+
Leather armour 6+

I had two armies, barbarians vs a combination of romans and knights. Gaming only stopped because he got fed up of losing :p, we used every model we had, and swapped armies with every game.

Hi!

While simple can it be expected any 5 year old could understand? Games at this level tend to be more graphical in nature since more constructed (i.e numerical) model are for school age children.

Just some thoughts....

My son already has an unusually good grasp of numbers and other abstract symbols.  I suppose most five year olds would need dice with pictures on them or something.

--- Kidhammer Battle Report---

The battlefield:
A plain with scattered boulders and a couple of small buildings. ?

The forces:

Alek's Atrocious Annihilators:
1 Space Marine, armed with a bolter
1 Wizard, armed with magic missiles and a staff
1 Chaos Warrior, armed with a greataxe
1 Imperial Guardsman, armed with a lasgun
1 Pit Fighter, armed with a flail and a spiked gauntlet

Ethan's Egregious Entrails Eaters
1 Imperial Noble, armed with a duelling pistol, rapier, and dagger
1 Chaos Warrior, armed with a sword
1 Mercenary, armed with a bow and an axe
1 One-armed Mercenary, armed with a sword
1 Hobbit, armed with a bow

The Battle:
Setup:
Alek concentrated all of his forces behind one of the buildings at his left flank. ?Ethan split his forces, putting the Noble and the one-armed merc on the side that Alek was contesting, and putting the remainer of his forces on the uncontested flank. ?

Turn One:
Alek, eager to get his troops to within firing range, moved them around the building. ?Ethan moved the main force from cover to cover and charged his pair directly towards Alek's position. ?

Turn Two:
Alek moved his forces foreward, and the Space Marine was within firing range of the one-armed merc! ?He opened fire, hitting his own model with the die and rolling a two! ?A miss! ?This stunning failure proved to be too much for our young general, and he abandoned his troops in favor of running around the living room with a toy ray gun, declaring that he was a robot. ?

Conclusion:
Alek mastered how to measure movement by the beginning of his second turn. ?He had no trouble with the dice, except for that two at the end, which he claimed fell within the range of "5+." ?I suspect deceit. ?We didn't get to practice shooting enough for me to see if he really got it, and no close combat occured at all. ?He seemed to be a bit intimidated by all of the rules (1.25 pages of 'em!), fearing that he would never be able to keep track of them all. ?When asked if he had fun, he answered, "Yes." ?

As far as Alek's generalship went, I give him high marks. ?By concentrating all five of his models on only two of mine, he exhibited sound tactics. ?I fully expect that I would have gotten trounced if the game had continued.

Hi!

I suspect if you made the key aspects of the mechanics into a graphical presentation you would eliminate that hurdle. Its just a matter on how their brain works at this age. Its very image oriented.

Oh, yeah.  Good idea.  He loves that kind of stuff.  A picture of the measuring tape, with the miniature, and a little arrow.  A picture of a gun-wielding maniac, and the ruler aimed at the hapless target.

Hi!

Yup, you got the right idea!

Heck I would not mind something like that for the games I play! :D

Go right ahead.  When I get my graphical reference sheet done I'll post it here, too.
