During the holidays I have delved into my pile of interesting books that I buy when I see them, but dont necessarily have time to read at the time (my "other" waste of money according to my wife :) )

I have just finished an excellent book "Nimitz" by E. Potter (no relation to Harry I'm afraid!).  It is the official biography of Admiral Chester Nimitz, particulalry focusing on his time as CinCPAC during WW2.

It is well written, thoroughly researched and an interesting view on the politics of Higher Command echelons.

I highly recommend it.

I use to be reading a book or journal all the time.  I envy you the that you have a challenging job, a family, read and work on Epic ... I must allot my time poorly. And spend too much time online ...   :{

Thankyou, but I'm not necessarily able to allot them each the appropriate time at the correct time either.  Its all a fine art of balancing that only sometimes I am able to get right of course!  :laugh:

I find that I need to read for 20-30mins every night to unwind and forget the day.  Thats when I get my reading done.  I'm trying to move away from trashy novels these days and read all those classics that I havent gotten around to - like Caesar's 'Conquest of Gaul', Tale of Two Cities, Count of Monte Cristo etc - in addition to biographies and historical books

Of course I still buy books at a far faster rate than I buy them!  :;):

After 8 hours of fiddling with program code I need something which requires no higher brain functions (eg. GW novels and such  }:) ) to unwind. A pity, really. I have been "reading" "The Rising Sun" for 1,5 years now and have all but forgotten the beginning. I'll have to start all over again. An excellent book, BTW, at least judging from the first 190 or so pages.

I've pretty much read all the GW novels in the last year or so, and while I enjoyed them (in a brainless way) I have decided to treat my cerebrum to stimulation more frequently from now on.

Of course that doesnt mean that the odd Sci-Fi paperback wont make its way in there...  :;):

Hi!

Take up speed reading guys....

I did and I have read every book I have ever own at least twice. I mainly read fantasy novels or sci-fi nowadays, but in my younger days I would read whole volumes of historical topics, mainly focusing on different wars, but also read about philosophy and theology.

I had a very nerdy childhood.....

Its funny, whilst I've always written my own Fantasy fiction, I've only really started reading fiction in the past year or two.

As a kid I always read factual books - mostly regarding WWII, military history in general as well as quite a lot on various aspects of AstroPhysics.

More recently I've been reading the Konrad Trilogy in my gardening lunchbreaks 3 days a week (Good "braindead" reading matter) & the "Runelords" series by David Farland in the evenings (& I Highly reccomend The Runelords - Brilliant epic scope & differnet takes on many areas of Fantasy).

However, I'm craving more real "brain-testing" stuff. I've lined up "A Brief History of Time" & "Black Holes & Baby universes" to read again (I read them when I was 15/16 & have a horrible feeling they'll make _less_ sense tome now...) but may have to look up "Nimitz" as well - thanks for the tip!

I still practically die laughing over much of it and I've read it many times.

Thanks for recommendation. I'll order it at the same time as "Disorder at Court". I've been in the proces of ordering it for a long time.

Edit: And if anyone can get his hands on the old Star Wreck books by Leah Rewolinsky (or somesuch) I'll recommend them warmly. I have read the first and third books (Generation Gap and Time Warped respectively) and nearly died laughing. I've yet to found the second one (Attack of the Jargonites), though.  :(
