Stand back, we're using science!

interesting if the technology pans out

Actually not included in that but in other materials on the tech, no layers == no striation :D

Hi!

You just but have to wonder what will be available another 5-10 years from now.

I think letting me anywhere near something that fast with good resoultion under 100 micrometers would probably create the eye of terror in real life, LOL! ;)

I always like to wait until a technology has matured a little before buying in.

This meant I didn't get my first phone until 2003, and that I've skipped blue-ray altogether. I don't know how long I can hold back on this though. 3D printing is Amazing!

Yeah that one is incredible. Going to really change the way Miniature Games are marketed as soon as they become more affordable.

Hi!

The key would be to learn 3d design. Those two mean anything you'd like is possible.

I was just watching a TED talk on this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihR9SX7dgRo

It seems a... umm... game changer (to quote the video, multiple times).
It will be a while until this reaches home use though I expect. The technology, software and tolerances of this are pretty exact and with the current layered technique still struggling to get acceptance I can see current technology dropping in price while the CLIP technology being refined for industrial use.

Hi!

Watched the video. Simply amazing.

All I know is that I want one. ;)

Basically it is old technology.
The resin is in a vat, the bottom of the vat has a window.
The layer image is projected through the window and the UV portion of the light will cure the resin.
To prevent the resin to bond with the "window" there is a layer of oxygen.
This oxygen is generated with the help of a layer of some stuff called PDMS. The PDMS can only hold some amount of oxygen to be released when printing, and has to be "aired" to restore it's store of oxygen.
But this does not prevent the bonding completely and also there are suction forces, so that the printers have some sort of release "procedure/mechanism" to separate the model from the window.
Also the PDMS will degrade and will have to be replaced after some time.
The airing and release procedures take much more time than the exposure. So if you could get rid of these procedures, you would save a lot of time.
And that is basically what they do. They seem not to use a layer of something on top of the window, but the window is made from that stuff. This allows oxygen to pass through the window, which is more efficient than "airing" the PDMS.
When you check the times, they give, they match the theoretical times you need to print such an object using a "fast" resin and foregoing the release procedure.
It still uses layers, it just prints them so fast that they look continuous, just like a video is a fast series of still images, CLIP is fast printing of layers, nothing fundamentally new just a buzz word.
The very thin layers may not be a feature, but a necessity, because with smaller layers the "curing power" needed is lower and the risk of involuntarily bonding with the window is lessened.
All models they show have small cross-sections which may hint to problems with the release. Those could stem from
not perfect oxygen layer or from suction forces.
Does anybody know how long it takes to slice a 51mm model at 1 um (that's 51000 slices) ?
Despite 1um layer height, bleed will limit the feature size. Still it will give a very smooth surface, but only in z.
For the projection they use dlp, so the resolution will be determined by the projector used and the build space.

Despite the claims I see the Carbon3D as an evolution not a revolution.

And yes I'd like to have one and buy one - if I can afford it and if it can print stuff with filled cross sections and if the bleeding can be controlled and if there is not something nicer or better before they can deliver a product.
