Powerkiting is one of my favorite hobbies; the name really says it all; it involves using large kites to provide you with enough power to perform a variety of activities; Kitesurfing, using the kite like the sail on a windsufer to pull you along, Buggying, similar, but with three-wheeled buggies on land, Mountainboarding, which is similar to buggying, but on mountainboards ... and other stuff like jumping, using the power to jump 3 or 4 meters in the air, and skidding along the ground.. etc...
Links: Flexifoil- a company who make superb kites... My kite looks like this.... Aeolian- A cool general kiting site.
At the moment I have a small(ish) kite called a Skytiger, 26sqft surface area, so it still provides a fair bit of lift- I had a superb day out today, jumping, skidding.. much fun!
So... Anyone else do it, or ever had a go?

Now that sounds cool! Where do you do this? I did windsurfing very briefly a long time ago, but I have wanted to take it up seriously for a while. Trouble is, I have no idea where I could do it, and this kind of thing is very expensive to sit in a shed!

I sometimes drive by a comptuer factory and thay have a big field outside where the wind currents are excellent. I've stopped before to watch the power kite people and become friendly before with a few who have let me "fly" their kites.
It's fun, but too expensive for the payback.
Primarch,
I know what you mean about the computer stuff. I drag myself out to the gym to keep from getting fat. With the children at school that I play with, the odds of me ever getting really fat are relatively low. Running around with little ones really burns the calories.
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

Primarch,
Being able to admit that you need the exercise is the beginning of getting around towards doing it. If I remember, you're ex-Navy. Use that military discipline and make your self run the tread mill for 20 or 30 minutes two or three times a week and work yourself up to more until you feel comfortable.
That's what I did when I saw myself getting too inactive.
The kiting is pretty good exercise, isn't it?
A good wind must really make your arms and legs work to keep the kite from flying away.
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

Heh, trust me it is seriously good fun, I pulled off a few jumps yesterday of about 1.5 meters above the ground, and forward about 6 meters!
- Scary, get the adrenaline going, but so exciting!
- And yes, it is also very good exercise, my arms and legs ache from yesterdays few hours flying, added to today's aches...
Hehe, it has kept me well away from my PC, no posts yesterday you notice, due to a fantastic constant breeze!
P.S. - I kite out on a large sports field, but you usually kitesurf in the sea, or on large lakes... making sure there is no offshore breeze of course!

Hi!
I hear you Maksim. Actually the new place I moved to has this convenient little track around the complex I can use to walk or run all within a good radius of the house.

Primarch,
I hear you, Maksim. Actually the new place I moved to has this convenient little track around the complex I can use to walk or run all within a good radius of the house. Primarch. |
That how I get back into things: a few walks, chasing the basketball around the court, letting the little ones tap my limited endurance and even a little hiking if I can find some partners.
Good luck!
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

....developments.... I plan on adding a new larger kite to my quiver, a 4.0sqm Firebee; look here -in the middle.. It is about twice the size of my Skytiger, so loads more power, so I'm planning on starting mountainboarding with it when I have the money.... much fun!
