Well, in about two hours I'm heading off to join my new gaming group to play Sky Galleons of Mars (SGOM).

I've never played it before although, generally speaking, I really like the whole Victorian Gaslight background. I've heard Jimbo mention it before as well. Just in case someone hasn't heard of it, SGOM is a game with ether ships fighting over Mars or other exotic areas. It's basically a naval game with sky ships.

What do you, gentlemen, think of Sky Galleons of Mars?

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

I am a great fan of Victorian SF (probably like it more than Epic) but never have the time to model and play as much as I would like.

I have had a few games of SGoM and really enjoyed it, and some of the metal models you can get are really nice, it was a pity they were so difficult to get hold of in the UK.

I am at the moment working on a variant Epic system, provisionally entitled Epic 1889, and Epic does seem a pretty nice system to use for colonial games - replace Orks with Zulus and Imperial Guard with British Colonial Infantry and voila.

At the recent Bristol Conflict I saw one of the competitors with a fantastic colonial themed Imperial Guard army, including a fantastic conversion of an Imperial Steam Tank into a Leman Russ variant. The Ogres were in fact Imperial Guard troopers in "Power Lifter" armour.

I will post some pics tomorrow (fingers crossed).

Jimbo,

Thanks for replying. It's good to hear from you.

I'm not actually that big a fan, but I do like it although not enough to build a collection. If they made it in 6mm, I'd think about it.

SGoM was a pretty good game. It reminded me of WWI dogfighting only with 1,000 ton aircraft! It was fun.

The guys were telling me that the metal models (i.e. the good ones) are pretty hard to get ahold of.

You mentioned this before. It sounds good. I wrote an alternate set of rules inspired by Epic for the Arab-Israeli wars. It's still used by quite a few groups. It would work for WWII or Moderns, but I designed it for the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Didn't this army make it into a White Dwarf?

I think I've seen this army online somewhere...

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

P.S.
During one of the next gatherings, some of the guys are voting to play Railwars - the Deadlands, another VSF kind of game.

Hi!

I owned and played Space 1889 (the RPG) and all the spin-offs that came later. Unfortunately it had little appeal to those I gamed with back then and I got rid of it. I would liked it even more if it had a provision for 6mm troops and other good VSF stuff. Then again, I like anything in 6mm...

I don't think it would be that hard to proxy for a Victorian Sci-fi 6mm game. Land Raiders could become "landships,"  gyrocopters as steam-propelled sky vehicles, and maybe some of the BFG ships could make suitable galleons of the sky.

Jimbo's project reminds me of the Epic W.W.II project that some members of the Netepic list have been working on. Speaking of which, I should find out how the progress is coming...

You might want to look at the old Eldar Space Fleet minis for this, if you can find them.

W.W.I minis would work just fine for VSF. There are even a few manufacturers who make pre-W.W.I minis that would probably look great in a VSF game.

...GW produced a range of "Praetorian (sp?) Imperial Guard" troops a while back, all limited edition in a boxed set... must have been during 97/98? ???

Might this have been what you were thinkling of Maksim?
