Hello,
I have seen some people place all their vehicles onto bases. I do not mean just Epic, but I am including WWII Micro, WWII 15mm etc.
Just curious if you do base all your vehicles and if so does it have an effect on the game?

Hi!
I have only seen basing of tanks in WWII microarmor games, never in epic. As far as epic goes there is no impact on the game. Most WWII microarmor games may be the same too.

I'm converting my ways in this somewhat. I never used to base anything I didn't stritly HAVE to for it to be game worthy.
However, I have come to the conclusion that models do look a lot better based & since most of my pieces spend most of their time on display rather than ont he table, I've started basing a lot more stuff.
I dont think you'll ever see me basing Imperial guard tanks, but I've done up my Ork Speed Freaks on simple flocked bases. Bikes, Scorchers and Speedstas on warmaster bases, buggies & Traks etc. on upside down olstyle square bases.
I've also been basing my leviathans etc. as shown on my workbench / website, but since I've never before painted such things I can't coment on how they play like theis

I usually only base my big stuff on bases (Leviathans, OGREs etc) and not the smaller vehicles (MBTs and APCs). I think bases do look better and do reduce wear on your paintjobs because you arent handling them as much, but it does take time.
I know signius bases his stuff and they look just beautiful. maybe we can coax him into posting some pics?

I'm not planning on basing my tanks, but Tuffskull's look nice- the one disadvantage of them is that if you use them on two tables- say one desert and one urban, than they may look a little out of place on one, whereas if you leave them unbased, then they look fine on both....

That is true, but then where does that leave your view of basing infantry?
I overcame this with the size of my collection. I have tables for urban, various green styles and snow scapes (also a grey barren landscape, but urban bases fit into that fine).
For my Imperial guard, I have a City guard regiment with urban bases, a agri-guard regiment with green bases and a tundra regiment with snow bases. Each regiment has its own style and I'll only take units from one regiment for any game (unless I ever play a game bigger tan 1 regiment again..). It means I have to make do with what the regiments kitted out with even if its not spot on for the job - makes for a more characterful game IMHO since real commanders have to make do with whats available and arent able to say "Well I have 36 spare Leman Russ. They'e on the other side of the planet, fighting on a snowcap, but I'm sure I'll be able to use them in this battle anyway..."
Similarly, all my old style titans and large vehicles go on mud/grass bases whilst all my current new style models are going on urban bases. The tundra regiment is last on my list so I havent started on any heavy support for them yet.
My Orks go on green bases, my chaos on urban bases and my 'Nids (will eventually) be on snow bases. So I have an army for each enviroment, and the Guard are always playing of course....

Yep, quite true about infantry bases....
The thing is, if you have a smaller collection (like me), you may wish to use these larger peices- Baneblades, Leiathans, etc, etc, with more than one force, but of course, it would be better to have this kind of thing attached to their own specific regiment, which is what I'm planning on when I have lots more tanks, infantry etc.....

AFVs - no. Small vehicles, bikes, guns, mortars, buggies, etc. - yes. And flock accordingly ...

I could not afford to have a full army for each "base" type. I wish I could because I am sure it looks nice. I just accept that my bases will not always match the table I am playing on.
In my mind I just think of the base the troops are on as a visual reminder of what kind of world they came from. So the base is no longer an issue in my mind and I can have fun.
As an aside, one of the WWII micro armor guys at the local store has mounted a small magnet between the treads. You can not see it from the front or back, only if you pick it up do you see it. He then has metal "bases made with ID numbers etc. and places the vehicle onto the base he wants it on.

I like basing small things, but avoid basing vehicles. I have been slowly converting to magnetics anyway.

I have been thinking about doing some form of base for all the vehicles so the troops and vehicles match in both look and style. I have always found it odd looking to have the troops on bases and the vehicles not.
But the problem I am having is that the larger vehicles look odd if the base is too big. I just am unsure what I want to do.

I've never really considered basing vehicles, but I have to admit, that after seeing some of the recent pics Cyber posted, it has started to appeal to me.
A simple base I will definantly be using is the flying bases for Eldar skimmers. I think it was Tuffskull's minis with them that caught my eye.
Only bad thing is thta basing is the part I enjoy least of all.

I generally have started basing with these conventions:
------------------------------
BASES:
Line infantry - long bases
Heavy weapons - square bases and sometimes pennies
Odd-sized support weapons - 20x30mm bases
Cavalry - 20x40mm Warmaster bases
Command stands - pennies
Vehicles - almost never
Dreadnoughts, Landspeeders, and other light vehicles - pennies
--------------------------
TERRAIN:
Mars Forgeworld - I usually texture my stands and paint / flock them with a reddish earth colour and iron ore oxide for flock. I often sprinkl small mechanical looking bitz on stands to represent Forgeworld refuse.
Green Worlds - Most of my many old stands have used various green combinations with flock and sponge foliage.
Desert World - I use texturing compound and GW desert flock. I may start using a finer sand.
Snow - I haven't done any 6mm snow stands yet. When I do, I'll use snow compound and a little autumn grass. I've done this for 25mm figures. My WWII Russians have forest bases.
-----------------------------

I have gotten in the bad habbit of basing nearly everyhting. I just like that way they look and feel. I dont feel that there is any effect on game play. The problem of missmatched bases and gaming terrain is a problem. Pinning or magnets would help the problem. But, it would mean that peices would have multiple bases. Unless, one were to develope a generic system of basing. I don't really care if the bases match or not. But now that I started making my own bases who knows. I may go the insane route of multiple bases for every peice.
