Sorry Wellspring, I'm just not that fond of him as an actor. I do take your point though that he probably would be a good player as I'd imagine he would get involved.
When I GM I always like to act various roles and can get quite animated, but it is incredibly difficult to find a group full of people who embrace role playing wholeheartedly and get into the spirit of the game. Part of the problem there is that a lot of role players are introverts by nature and it can be difficult for them to change the habit of a lifetime, even among people of a similar disposition. So yes, he probably would be an excellent addition to a gaming group, but it is difficult for me to change the habit of a lifetime and not be snarky!
PS it's also great that he is giving some cred to a hobby that really needs some!
Your point is very well taken. Obviously to each his own. I think I'm reacting not so much to you as to gamers who reject celebrity gamers on the grounds that they're not sincere enough or don't play the right games or whatever.
I've seen endless debates over whether Felicia Day (to pick an example) is genuinely a gamer or if she's just trying to carve out a sweet niche for herself as a nerd idol. It seems to me like a weird kind of elitism, like a 90's era grunge fan grumbling that Bleach was the better Nirvana album and that grunge sold out and it used to be about the music. The same thing happened in punk, goth, electronica, and lots of other movements. I'd LOVE it if more people played games. Minis games, roleplaying games, board games, card games, whatever. Reading peoples' minds for their sincerity or their devotion to some single gamer's narrow definition of what "really" constitutes the hobby seems silly.
I realize that that's not what you're doing. It just set off a pet peeve moment.
