Who care if they only sell 12? It's not like space on the website is expensive. What they DO get is lots of people posting it on forums, facebook and spreading it about. There are those who'll be rude about it, but they were never going to be customers anyway.

It's also a way to induce completionists by way of example to buy more for their collections to "finish" their pet company.

Auto companies often make concept cars as a marketing exercise, rather than because they think they'll sell one. Supercars are often the same.

How is this dumb marketing? The price for them to provide this product is close to zero, since it's just a combo deal for products they already stock. Painting up an example is something their professional painters do anyway. The page on the web store was made by graphic designers they already have. I suspect they could add this to their catalog using organizational slack alone. Total marginal cost to them: zero. It supports their brand message, so I see this as a smart move even if (as is likely) no one ever buys one.

Conceptually it is not a bad idea as it has effectively 0 cost to them. It's a few big boxes of their existing sku's to ship at what is basically market price. However it's a strategic mistake when the fan bases increasingly vocal at perceived costs, ever larger armies to even play basic games, and an ever more frequent release-nerf-release cycle. Again, this is perception regardless of justification or accuracy at a time of static revenue (adjustment for inflation) when ever more competitors are entering the market.
