I wondered whether GW had tried to sue for breach of IP etc. . . . ;)

Otherwise, Pacific Rim isn't in the same class of *BAD* as the '50s "killer B" films (creature from the black lagoon etc) that are Sooo bad they are funny. As such I agree with Bissler that it was non-descript with a formulaic plot, mainly CGG and so just meh . . .

Hi!

Different tastes is all. I enjoyed it because it was the first depiction of "battle robots" in a long time and I enjoyed it in that sense.

Then again I don't go to the movies for plot or acting. It's just a visceral sensory thing for me.

Trying to resist seeing it. I hate that feeling of stolen time that you can never get back. From Bidder's review it sounds even worse than that epic fail Elysium. First film was brilliant. I blame Hollywood.

It's giant robots fighting giant monsters - it's not going to be a thought provoking cultural classic. That said, I was a bit annoyed they had to make it SO cheesy, especially the "comedy" bits (I know what you mean about the scientists). And I don't think there's really an excuse for the formulaic Americanherowithnopersonality characters.

Still, it's giant robots fighting giant monsters. With swords.

Watched the Lone Ranger last night. It was ok but not anything great or truly awful. I thought it would be more fun than it was and I was surprised how dark some of the film was. Needed to be funnier and have more action set pieces.

Another example of Hollywood making a film which is neither for children nor adults, all just to achieve the commercial Holy Grail of the 12 / PG-13 certificate. I think everyone is being cheated out of good films because of this. I feel sorry for younger kids who only seem to get animations made for them. It would be nice to see some live action films made for them as well.

It is a shame they don't have something like Labyrinth(the one with David Bowie) to watch growing up, but then a lot of the animations coming out right now are definitely better than the animations when I was a kid.

Especially if its young girls watching it. Compare the constant helpless disney princess to disney princesses in Brave and Frozen, and I'm definitely much more comfortable with the idea of bringing up a young girl watching those.

I think the teenagers suffer a lot though, certainly more than when I was a teen. Maybe I'm missing something but I only ever see over the top action (some good stuff in the super hero movies to be fair), fart comedies or bitchy people deserve eachother comedies(or teen rom-coms as they call them).

You're absolutely right about the animations, they are much better and also they have started having stronger female characters which I think is a great thing for young girls, particularly at a time where music videos and magazines sexualise women in a way that was almost unthinkable 25 odd years ago.

I just lament the lack of Indiana Jones / Goonies / Back to the Future type films which had a fun aesthetic about them and parents could watch with their kids without too much concern about the violence.

Hmph, I'm really sounding old saying things like this! And I don't even have kids! ;D

There's a distinct lack of adventure movies and stories nowadays. I actually think the primary audience for them wouldn't be youth as opposed to adults that grew up watching the above mentioned movies in fact. Something like the Goonies just doesn't resonate with younger kids anymore. I think they live such a different life than we did. For instance when I watched it with my nephew he enjoyed it but it didn't capture his imagination at all. I was curious about that and talking with him I realized its because he doesn't have anything close to common frame of reference to what those kids did vs what he did. He never roamed everywhere high and low with a gaggle of kids on their bikes exploring streams, getting into "trouble", out till the street lights came on that everyone my age seemed to have. His life consists of going to school and then playing his Xbox.

I know I'm having a get off the lawn moment there as well :)

I had never thought of that Jimmy, that is a very good point. Out of interest, in the states is it children are opting to play indoors? Or is the same thing going on there as has happened in the UK, parents seem unable to allow their children to go out and play because they think there is a paedophile lurking on every corner waiting to abduct their child?

Yeah more the hovering helicopter whataboutthechildren TM my children will be abducted thing

people think I'm crazy as my 2 and 4 year olds spend most of their day running around outside doing their thing (as long as I can periodically hear them doing stuff through the window I know they're fine - quiet is the enemy :D). I've had people pound on my front door and tell me, "did you know your children are out in the yard all by themselves?!?!?!?". When I tell them, "yes" and give them that look I usually reserve for creationists they are appalled. Its our of my few.pleasures in life :)

Good on you! Childhood should be a time for running around outside. and having fun. Wish there were more like you bud!

Anyway, this thread is getting off-course, anyone else seen any films?

And should I maybe set up a nostalgic thread "it wasn't like that in my day"?! :D

Going to check out the new XMen later today (I have to take The Prodigy to the Boeing Museum of Flight today for Memorial day first). I'll let you know how it is.
