I think that is what this person is suggesting here:

I don't get it.

::)

It certainly seems like the stereotypical historical grognard, dismissing anything non-historical as childish. Doesnt he understand that Sci-Fi gaming is just historical gaming WITH LAZERS? ;D Can't be helped, I guess.

Found it amusing myself, however:

Quote:
Historical Wargaming is mainstream anyway (in the UK at least …)

Where does this person live and how to they define mainstream? :-\

The irony of someone persecuting Science Fiction wargamers for their reliance on books only with pretty pictures, while simulaneously including spelling errors and grammatical errors by not capitalising, is epic.

Anyone of any doubt on the average intelligence level of science fiction wargamers should do a survey here. We have an above average number of post-grad students (not that this the absolute definition of intelligence), including myself.

I think we can chalk that one up to trolling.

Taccom membership is not representative of the average intelligence level of science fiction wargamers. Personally speaking, I dropped bleach on my shoes this morning whilst trying to use a spade with a scouring pad taped to it to wash out a wheely bin – i can only apologise for bringing down the average.

Books with pictures are awesome.

Bah ... everybody has an opinion ... I don't care if someone thinks Sci-fi is dumb. I started historical gaming and studied and gamed historical long before I got into sci-fi gaming. And I still study history ... Plus a lived a very tiny piece of history during the Cold War ... I've run into that type of opinion on TMP before, I'm a big advocate of "Do What Works For U" ... I sort of think all the guys on TMP that love to play Zombie gaming is kind of dumb, but again ... DWWFU ... :P ;)

Not so much that he thinks sci-fi is dumb, but he thinks sci-fi gamers are dumb as they can't manage books without pictures...

Well I like books with pictures ... but most books I've read don't have any ... ;D It's kind of like my dog is bigger than your dog ... Who cares ! ::) " I'll fight any man in this bar for a dollar !" - Groucho Marx ;D

This typifies why I don't bother reading TMP. A stupid topic, with typically elitist and asinine responses.

Before we all get too indignant, there are plenty of topics on taccom containing more than a degree of condescension towards 40k gamers (mentioning it as a game for children, etc), i'm guilty of posting in several of them :) :( Some members of taccom think 28mm 40k is dumb, some members of TMP think sci-fi wargames are dumb, and I agree with L4 about zombie games*.

*and alternative history – what if Peru had won WW2? What if? Well it didn't, now stop making up silly things and let me paint my exo-armoured space dwarfs and psychic mega-bugs.

My biggest beef with all the dumb Sci-Fi gamers is how easily they can beat me at whatever game it is I happen to be playing with them. To paraphrase Obiwan, who is the real fool, the fool or the fool who loses to him?

There is nothing worse than losing to a bag of hammers.

Yeah, just troll back that historical wargamers have no imagination or creativity - they even need picture books to tell them what colour paints to use. They like that. :-p

(Just like to point out i do/have play historical as well as sci-fi, fantisy, modern and alt history games - all good.)

Indeed, or perhaps point out the irony that "historical" wargaming (using models and a rulebook on a tabletop) was invented by the Godfather of science fiction, H.G. Wells.

"Historical" wargaming has no basis in historical reality what so ever. A player has access to levels of command, control and knowledge that no actual General has ever experienced. As such historical gaming is unquestionably a branch of fantasy gaming.
