OK time is coming close to start the next marine army project. I've been collecting up a fair sized bit of forces to make a run of it with a hopefully higher level of quality than ever before. However the question comes up as to what chapter I should run with so I figured I'd just bring the question before the synod to render judgement. Way back in the heady Rogue Trader days a much younger me looked and just fell in love with the Blood Angels in that classic marines color scheme spread. I will admit that some of it might have been from the fact that I know I might have trouble painting up some of the other colors and I knew solid red was something I could handle. However since then I've done more than my fair share of them so perhaps I should move on? Smurfs are way over done by just about every snot nosed punk that comes into a GW store nowadays but it seems that the BA and BT have almost surpassed them in being cliche'. In recent years I've resurrected my epic collection and went with a Minotaurs force so perhaps I should continue on that path. However I can say that stylistically I've changed quite a bit so I am not so sure continuing with them makes sense. Perhaps Carcharodons are in order but they seem rather plain to me. Dark Angels seem somewhat interesting but that's more because of the color schemes as opposed to the fluff. I've thought about Red Scorpions as I really like that look but isn't that just the new cool chapter to play now? ![]() So thoughts? |

Minotaurs...if they're a decent size, I'd do something else. Variety is the spice of life. Space Sharks are awesome. Carcharodons are dumb. Dark Angels are neat, but if you don't like the fluff what's the point? Red Scorpions...Forge World tries too hard to make them cool. It's clear there's only one option for you: play my Stone Hearts! ![]() OK, more seriously, what are you looking for in colors and background? |

I'll have bull-man doors in a few months, if that helps make up your mind. Er, if you're talking about 6mm. |

Ahhh yes. Totally 6mm force. I've gone WAYYYYYYY too far down the primrose path to even think of changing out the mensurating cherubs BFG fleet. Simulated Knave wrote: Minotaurs...if they're a decent size, I'd do something else. Variety is the spice of life. I agree that this line of thought makes me raise the current question. The current force is smack at 3000 points. Not huge but a fair size. It really wasn't built on any meta concerns vs "let's get one of everything 'cause I like to paint". Simulated Knave wrote: Space Sharks are awesome. Carcharodons are dumb. Que? Simulated Knave wrote: Dark Angels are neat, but if you don't like the fluff what's the point? Because at 6mm they have one of the better looks with the deathwing and ravenwing. The oft used red bolters are a nice touch too. Simulated Knave wrote: Red Scorpions...Forge World tries too hard to make them cool. Agreed that this seems to be belle of the ball with FW at the moment but you do have to admit that color-wise they look great. Perhaps it is just my love of yellow and blue/grey. But of course! ![]() Otterman wrote: I'll have bull-man doors in a few months, if that helps make up your mind. Actually that does make this harder ![]() ![]() The deal with the BA would be that at one point I had a BA force (all from 2nd edition days) that would probably of been close to 6k. Everything other than a single tac company of beakies has given away now but I will hang my head in shame and admit these were painted back in the terrible days of terracotta colored blood angels. This could be my chance to redeem myself with proper red guys. Maybe I should just go with a successor chapter like the Flesh Tearers? Maybe I should just paint Space Otters and be done with it? ![]() |

It really wasn't built on any meta concerns vs "let's get one of everything 'cause I like to paint". Maybe bulk it up to 4000, then start on another? That's the target size for most of my Marine armies (the Stone Hearts may get more, but I like them best). Or wait until the mighty Otter produces some manbull doors and do other guys in the interim. Quote: Que? The Space Sharks were awesome for twenty years. Then, one day, Forge World got embarassed by the name, and tried to dress it up as Characarodons. Shameful. Quote: Because at 6mm they have one of the better looks with the deathwing and ravenwing. The oft used red bolters are a nice touch too. True. They are purty. Quote: Agreed that this seems to be belle of the ball with FW at the moment but you do have to admit that color-wise they look great. Perhaps it is just my love of yellow and blue/grey. They do look nice, I admit. I'm not sure how well the look will translate at 6mm, though. Quote: But of course! ![]() Oh, good! More-or-less Dark Angels Green, grey trim, IA's in my signature. Try to avoid too much nice shiny equipment, and feel free to use surplus Gyrocopters as Land Speeders. And make sure to take people's money when you're done beating them up. Leaving aside pushing for my own chapter, I'd recommend doing something new for a while, then expanding the Minotaurs to 4000 points, then going back to the new chapter. |

Attached battle brothers in that theme. Might be a joke army but would be awesome to raise the banner of our very own friendly water mammal! Attachment: Shoulder guards display company and rank markings. Squad markings are indicated as numbers (0-9) on the left shoulder. Here we see a 2nd company (the Grey Sky company) sergeant (red command). |

Figured I'd document the final outcome here: As we've lost the friendly water mammal and derailed many of my plans I am not going to go further with the Minotaurs as I had planed to reboot ALL the Land Raiders and infantry with the new stuff. They will live as is from now on as achilles and other goodness are not found in the mountain of metal painting backlog ![]() Attachment: thanks everyone! |
