I think I remember that one.  :D

Funny the things you forget until someone else says something.

Hmm...I started with roleplaying, from the old D&D computer games...to the D&D red box (sometime in the late eighties...), then someone passed me a White Dwarf for the roleplay content, and it was one which featured the latest Golden Daemon winners...I've been hooked on miniature wargaming since :D

Hi Dafrca,

Dafrca: However, if they did not pull you into this hobby, I would say tell us not your first, but the game that started you down the path to Darkness, um, I mean becoming a War Gamer.

The games that dragged me into the hobby would be:

Battletech (The early version called Battledroids) was the game that got me into 6mm sci-fi miniatures.

Chainmail and D&D got me into fantasy roleplaying and fantasy miniatures.

Many different Avalon Hill games got me into board gaming in a serious sense. I loved strategy board games before I discovered Avalon Hill, but Avalon Hill games were the mark of a wargamer, not low-level "kid" games like Stratego, Pente or Go.

Stratego, Chess, Pente, Go, etc. are all wonderful games, but they lack the visual and organizational elements that those other games have. They are games with simplistic but complex and rich strategies... if that makes sense.  :D

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Hi!

I agree. While I loved those board games, I always found that something was missing. Until epic came around.... :;):

Maksim,

I agree. I played Chess and Pente in Jr. High School. They were fun and made me think, but they were not the games that drove me to the miniatures etc.

Even Role Playing with it's miniatures did not do it for me.

AH had a nice game called Feudal. It had small miniatures and castles. The "board" had a different look. THen I saw an Ad for Rogue Trader. To be honest, I ordered it as a Role Playing Game. Once it arrived we bought a box of Marines and Rhinos (they came three to a box). We were doomed then.

I missed AT, but we were major into SM. I must have bought three boxes myself. Thus my 6mm days started.

Adeptus Titanicus happened for me by accident...

I was a solid microarmour and Battletech player by 1989 and saw the original plastic Warlord Titans box and fell in love...

After that, I was solidly into Epic...

Of course, in those days, my battlemechs often proxied onto the Horus Heresy battlefield... :D

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Hi!

I remember Feudal. I had that game. Although I was into minis already at the time I had it.

Hi!

Nothing wrong with that, I still use BT proxies to this day.  :)

Hi!

Milton Bradleys Tank Battle and Parker Brothers Risk, circa 1972-73.

Primarch

Let's not forget Battleship! I forgot about MB's Tank Battles. That was a fun game. Milton Bradley did put out quite few quasi-wargames. Now that I think about it, I might have played Stratego before anything else, probably around 1970, but I wouldn't consider that a true wargame.

Man, some of you guys make me feel old...

First genre wargame:  Melee/Wizard ca. 1981
First mini wargame:  SM2 ca. 1991

Plenty of Car Wars, Battletech and SFB in there, too.
