Hi all,
my Aeronef interests have led me away from the beaten GW path to discover an extremely interesting prize - a book by H.G.Wells, the author of The War of the Worlds, The Time Machine, The Invisible Man, The Island of Dr. Moreau etc., entitled 'Little Wars'. This is the birth of war games as we know them - with the turn sequence, points for victory and for killed or captured enemy, rules for artillery (which was then spring-loaded and really fired!), close combat, cavalry moving more than infantry, scenarios, terrain, etc. - the works! My edition, a reprint by Kessinger Publishing, unfortunately does not include the photos and diagrams, which complete what must be the first battle report ever! The White Dwarf reports are surprisingly similar, only (of late) less interesting! The troops used are period lead soldiers, 2" high. The rules are very simple, and most people would probably prefare our usual more complex fare. But this one was certainly an eye-opener, and a good buy for anyone interested in the history of wargaming.

You will find the full text of Little Wars free online at Project Gutenberg. I came across this awhile ago but pretty much forgot about it as I had a project due in. There are quite a few books here online, including War of the Worlds etc, all of which are free to read/download legitimately

Thanks Haarken - I like the feel of a book in my hands, and it was quite cheap too, so I still am pleased with it - but now I have the bonus of the Gutenberg site too - useful!

Ah, the good old days, in my long distant youth airfix still did cannon that fired (we used matchsticks) until I picked up Command Decision and the cannon were replaced with dice. Had a load of the Prince August 'make them at home' minis for earlier periods too.
