Post subject:  Has anyone piloted an Aeronef?

I was wondering if anyone had any exeprience with Aeronef (or similar) Victorian SF wargames?

They look like a LOT of fun and I am feeling very tempted to get drawn into yet another scale/genre/period despite the dearth of time to paint and play what I already have. ?Then again as a good naval officer I like the old Ironclad type era. ?They also look like lots of fun to scratch build...

For those who have no idea what I am talking about, Aeronefs are JulesVern-esque dirigables, zepplins and other like 'floating ships'. ?You can see what I mean here:

All comments/experiences of this genre most welcome!

Cheers,
Tas

Oh no Tas, not AIRSHIPS! I'd never heard of this, and now I'm drooling. Aaargh. I'd love to see these tackling Martian tripods! :D

Yes. My local group with Vince has played Skyships, Aeronef and other VSF games many times.

How did you find it Maksim? ?It looks like great fun!

What rules did you use? ?I'm after something with detail, but able to play with a number of ships also for some squadron battles.

cheers

Hi Tas,

How did you find it Maksim?  It looks like great fun!

I've liked the VSF games we have played.

We played a ground conflict in the last game with a 25mm airship that flew over for air cover! One of the guys has built a number of 25mm airships.

What rules did you use? I'm after something with detail, but able to play with a number of ships also for some squadron battles.

I think we used "Sky Galleons Over Mars" or something like that. I believe that the abbreviation is SGOM. We might have used Aeronef, but I'm not sure. I was more of a player than a rules afficionado or a gamemaster.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Thanks Maksim- Sounds fun!  As far as I can make out SGOM is an excellent but complex set ideal for 1 or 2 ships per side max.  Aeronef is a more simplified verison ideal for fleet battles.

Anyhow, I've decided its worth a dabble and I've ordered Aeronef and its expansion from Wessex games and have started scratchbuilding my first 'Nef.  Wessex are planning to expand their multinational range soon - with Martians!  War of the Worlds is here (in its right and proper time period too, not this updated modern crud Sir! :D )

And what's worse is I'm ordering the rules books too, + a handful of ships (mainly French, a preference based on the ships' designs). Sighs. This is ALL your fault Tas. ? ? :p ? :D

PS I agree wholeheartedly with the classic War of the Worlds preference, and if I hadn't already been attracted to Aeronef, this news would've done the trick, by jingo!

try Iron Stars by Majestic12, it's a good ruleset and you can download a free demo (with basic rules and a simple scenario)

It seems Aeronef and Iron Stars combined could make for an interesting campaign in the solar system...

Why am I having "Larry Leadhead" flashback right now...as I reach for my Visa and fill out my online ordering forms....

Glad to see I'm not alone in my descent into further madness V - your company is most appreciated!  I like the French 'Nefs very much too but am trying to decdie what fleets I want.  I'm thinking of a campaign between the French, Brits, Germans and Russians around the Pacific where each takes over a different colony in Australia prior to the 1900 Federation.

Further research has thrown up these Nef things:

Advanced Nef Rules:
www.btinternet.com/~david.manley/ wargames/Odds/adnef1.htm

Some great ship logs here
www.seekrieg.com/Aeronef/Log-GBR-Steadfast-LR.pdf

and some good examples of scratchbuilt Nefs at these sites here - so the price is right Gary_Clark!

There is a Nef Yahoo group as well.

Thanks for the link Drugo - Welcome to the forums!

Back to day-dreaming of aero-motives chaps!

And your research makes up for getting me into this, Tas... or does it make it worse? Sigh - I love the idea of dirigibles and heavier than air vehicles lumbering about the sky. Think League of Extraordinary Gents vol 1 (the book i.e. comic, not the film), add LuftKpt Mors, and The Master of the World, and (of course) Martian fighting machines.... :D :D :D

For some reason I've really stsrted to like Sci-fi history in the last few years. I already have Gear Krieg and have thought about doing the ultimate heresy: combining weird wars with sci-fi.

So do I V! Add to those ideas a cucumber sandwhich, a monacle wearing genius and a gin and tonic, and you've got yourself some Atmosphere! ?When are we getting together for a game? hehe

Mojarn - maybe the Great Crusade was conducted in dirigables eh?

I also found this nice French Fleet:

I love the Battlecruiser and the Aerial carrier!
