Is anyone playing or collecting anything besides Epic?

I've been buying a lot of random stuff lately, and had money burning a hole in my pocket so I picked up the Star Wars miniature game by Wizards of the Coast. I can't say I am all that impressed, but for what it is, it would be pretty cool if I were travelling or something. Normally I can't stand games that involve rare and collectable parts, which is why I never got into Magic the Gathering. But I'll build up 100 point squads for the Empire and Rebellion, and then put the game away into storage. LOL.

Also, I had some more money burning a hole in my pocket so I picked up Mech Warrior: Dark Ages by Wizkids. I've been interested in Wizkids hero games, but to be honest I am only interested in getting some of my favorite heros, like Batman and Wolverine, so I knew it would cost me some $$$ to do that so I avoided it. I knew Mech Warrior had some cheesy minis to it, but I thought, what the hell?

Well, to my surprise the game isn't map driven, so it is just like Epic. The minis aren't very good (besides, name one really cool Mech that wasn't stolen from a Japanimation show: you can't), and the paint jobs suck. But again, for what it is it isn't too bad.

I picked up some extra boosters and wasn't really crazy about what I got, but for some reason I want to make the minis as cool as I can so I am soaking some of them in brake fluid in hopes of re-painting them.

The great thing about these games is that everything fits in the Starter Set, so that = two thumbs up in my book.

I've realized that these are really the kinds of games I prefer now. I've been complaining for awhile now about 40k, or even Epic, where so much is required to play that it hinders the game. I've been waiting to pick up some Starter Sets for Warmaster too, as I think that it's great that your army can pretty much fit in those boxes.

I thought about picking up Mighty Armies, but they do look so cheesy. But, these are the kind of games I like now, as if they don't take themselves too seriously. How can they?? LOL

Anyway, ronding out some of the other games I have, Mordheim is becoming a classic. It requires so little space to play on, and I recently picked up a nice foam board that was about 3 feet by 2 feet or so, and it's perfect for skirmish games like Mordheim or even lord of the Rings (LOTR is not a game of mass combat to me). I've decided that if the game requires more room that what can fit on that foam board, I don't have time for it. Adeptus Titanicus can be played on it too, but that's the only Epic game. . .

Except for Man O' War. :) Still my favorite game of all time.

I've pretty much got everything now, but my interest is leaning to these 'everything fits in the Starter Set' mini games. They are easy to play, don't require much effort to set up or collect, and don't require a $50 rulebook, codex, $400 in minis, and about a year for painting. The minis aren't the greatest, but hell, you get what you pay for.

Anyone else playing these? Recommend any?

Hi!

As Maksim, I'm pretty much 6mm.

However, the new Starship Trooper game for 2005 looks tempting.... :D

I know what you mean Gary...

Off the top of my head, I have:

Ancients, some ACW, some Nappies, WWI, WWII, Arab-Israeli, NATO / Warsaw Pact, Missile Boats, Aircraft from WWI to the present, Car Wars, more Sci-fi than I can shake a stick at and that's only in 6mm. :)

I have a few odd pieces in the "non-chosen" scales... :D

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

I've very few of the games you mention, I do have LOTR, though mainly for painting rather than gaming, it is a skirmish game and the rules aren't great. Also WWII, in 6mm, 76th and 32nd ish, actually a lot of the figs are from different manufacturers in slightly different scales and several different rule sets to go with them. (I've also most of the Epic rule sets)

I constantly have about half a dozen projects on the go, all from different scales and games. Aside from Epic and Gothic Tyranids, I have some 15mm Dacians (for Vis Bellica), WWII Micro Armour (for Panzer War and Panzer Marsch), Full Thrust ships that I will convert up, and some WHFB Lizardmen Skinks that will be used for Battlestorm.

In line I have minis from a huge range of games and settings which I wil probably never get around to (I cant wait until I retire!).

BFG and Necromunda are still my other favourites, although its been a while since I've had a game of either... :(

Hi All,

The best thing about modelling different periods in the same scale (6mm, the chosen scale! :) ) is the cross-over of painting and modelling techniques as well as only needing one set of terrain.

My Ancients terrain works for my microarmor, which works for my Epic, which...

when I get my Baran Siegemasters going, I will take a little fiendish gleee in seeing them try to crack Tobruk and Stalingrad just like it happened in WWII. I enjoy setting up "older" battles for the sci-fi games. Noone usually notices...  :)

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Micro Armour: Hi. The Micro Armour project is going well. I am currently investigating and researching the rules sets. I have aquired Panzer War (free from the web site), Panzer Marsch, and for modern stuff, Spearhead Modern. Also, in order to add to my collection of 'WWII rules sets with the word Panzer in the title', I have ordered Mein Panzer which I am waiting to be delivered from the US. While this is in transit, I am working my way through reading the rules, starting with Panzer War.

Micro Armour: In mini terms, I have pulled together, a couple of packs of GHQ Panzers, and one each of Matildas and Shermans, along with some infantry (as you may have guessed ?:D ?). The Matildas will be the first under the brush, as soon as I have had the time to research the various painting patterns and colours. Then, shock and horror, I may even get time to play a game of one of the rules sets! ?:o

FULL THRUST SUBMERSIBLES: I am converting the FT vessels. I am developing a game based on near future sub combat, and I have found that this is a seriously neglected area and the best way to find minis for it is to convert spaceships. So, I have four to convert for playtesting the first real version of the rules. When I get organised I will throw together a web page and look into eventually getting it all published, but that is a long way of for now.

Warhammer Fantasy Battles and BFG. I play these 2.  I have a seizable High Elf army for WHF and both imperial and chaos fleet for BFG, wherre the bigger one is the chaos fleet.

I play all those games, and for BFG I am currently stuck with GW miniatures. For WHF I collect from other brands as well, but to my own dislike I own too much GW stuff. Problems of having friends in the company, you see. Trying to reverse that lately! :D

I too have a collection of mech warrior click stuff and it really should not be sniffed at. if you are prepared to spend a little time on them they "brush up" remarkably well. They are, if you buy the "green" units from someone who sells individual models like popularcollections.com, VERY cheap. I rarely pay more than a dollar a unit . The infantry arond 30 cents etc etc. Anyway if your interested take a look at what can be achieved

BTW Although 10mm, much of the armour could be used for super heavy stuff for epic.
