I recently found out that there is a group of BT players around, and I can join them.

Games are pretty much FFA-style, with no mass, cost or BV limitations, played using Level 1 tech.

So, I went for enchancing some of my older designs. The final output of Battle Mech Designer is as follows:
                         BattleMech Technical Readout

LCT-4V Locust

Mass: 35 tons
Chassis: Bergan VII
Power Plant: VOX 280
Cruising Speed: 86.4 km/h
Maximum Speed: 129.6 km/h
Jump Jets: None
  Jump Capacity: 0 meters
Armor: StarSlab/1
Armament: 1
  3 Martell Medium Laser
Manufacturer(s): 1
  Bergan Industries
Communications System: Garret T10B
Targeting & Tracking System: O/P 911

Overview:
Ultimate incarnation of the Locust, this Mech features a deadly range of improvements.

Thanks to reinforced chassis and improved engine, it is much heavier armored then the normal Locusts, whilst still retaining the impressive speed of its precedessors.

And when it comes to kicking butt, it does have its 5 cents to add too, thanks to a total of three Medium Lasers installed in arms and torso.

For those pilots who prize speed and firepower more then their own safety, there is also a variant that trades some of its armor for an extra heat sink, so that the pilot can fire all weapons installed and run at the same time, without need to take care of rising heat levels.

Everything has its price, however, and thus for being twice as good as standard Locusts it is also twice as expensive...

All pilots who encounter an unusually equipped Locust should be prepared for a nasty surprise from now on!

What do you think? Will it be effective?

Hmm, how much do the lasers generate heat? IMO lasers in BT are generally better than autocannons or missiles (no exploding ammo) so personally I like it. However, at the same time I must admit that it has been 10 years since I last played Battletech.

Not played BT before but friends who had introduced me to Mechwarrior- the new clix games produced by Wizkids, and I was hooked.

I have a couple of Locusts in my Mechwarrior collection- unfortunately they have very poor stats in the game and therefore rarely get used unless playing a specific scenario.

What model are you using for your BT Locust?

Cheers

Mojarn: They generate 3 pts of heat. You are pretty calm if you shoot them all and restrain to walking, if you are running then from time to time you'll need to make a break for dropping to a safe heat level.

Insomniac: Plastic Locust from the Battletech 3rd edition boxed set, removing the machine guns and adding two Medium lasers from a plastic Shadowhawk from the very same source.

I must also tell you that the classic BT has very little in common with MWDA, and I recommend you check out the Classic Battletech, which is still in production. Locusts are fast, cheap and relatively deadly when used right. VERY few mechs can survive combat with a full lance of them.

Hi

Friends have said that CBT was great fun to play but overly complex. I am hoping at some point they release a version combining the best features of CBT and MWDA and that I would get to use all my MWDA figures to play CBT.

With over 10,000 points of Swordsworn (parent faction = House Davion) and already 2,000 points of Stormhammers (parent faction = House Steiner) I am all set for a mini Fed-Com civil war re-enactment!!

Cheers

James

CBT rules feature two levels: basic, which is combined pretty much only of walking around and shooting, and the advanced level, which altough complex is much more realistic.

Also, as you see above, in CBT player can design his own mechs to suit his tactics - a very useful asset indeed...

I had CityTech a while ago, and liked it. What is CBT (? Battle Tech, I guess), what books/rules/expansions are available and where can I get it form in the UK. I like sound of loads of detail!  :p

CBT = Classic Battletech.

One of the beaties of the BT system is mech construction / customization. That's the main reason, I think the system has lasted so long.

I had a math whiz friend who ran efficeincy / efficacy tables on all of the BT weapons and the SL / MG / ML / LL are the most efficient weapons.

Arming a Locust with three MLs has always been the only way to go.

A pile of MGs also works well if you are a patient gambler.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

CyberShadow: Check these two:
Classic Battletech home page. (to buy CBT) Lords of the Battlefield community. (to talk with people about CT, CBT and MWDA)

Maksim, you're absolutely right, though the MG's can really twist one's brain (I made a 75 ton "Raptor" BattleMech with 16 MG's)

Great. Thanks for the links. What do I need to get going, and what would you recommend as optional extra books and sources? I am looking for a single book with the complete set of rules and design guidelines for Mechs. Does that exist?

Thanks.

Not sure, heard there is something like that and its called Maximum Tech.

For designing your own mechs, I'd advise to get BattleMech Designer v 9.71 by Eric Ramey (sp?) - I'm using it and its 100% working. If you fancy level 3 stuff, though, better check out the Drawing Board. Got both somwhere, but cant tell where at the moment.   If you cant find them yourself, I'd be glad to e-mail them to you. :)
