Any PC/console gamers here? I'm sure there must be some amongst us, the wargaming demographic is similar in many ways.  :p

I've really got back into PC gaming in the last couple of years, since upgrading my old clunker of a machine to something rather snazzier. I've been catching up on some newer releases recently, as well as playing some old classics.

I completed Bioshock for the first time last week, which absolutely blew me away with it's incredible story, art design and realisation of the insane world or Rapture. Its been a long time since a game has sucked me in quite so much. Graphics, incredible atmosphere and the sheer attention to detail of every aspect make for a compelling experience; if any of you play FPS games but haven't picked it up, I highly recommend that you do so as soon as possible!

Now I have the original F.E.A.R to play, but for a break from FPS runnign and gunning I decided to install the original Homeworld (from 1999, doesn't time fly!  :oh: ).

I'm not really a RTS player, but Homeworld has the most amazing story and beautiful graphics for a 10 year old game, awesome spaceship designs and simply incredible gameplay. I'd forgotten quite how different (and difficult) it is to anything else, but I'm having a lot of fun making my way through the single player campaign for the umpteenth time.
Again, highly recomended, you can pick it up for peanuts these days and you'll have many hours being dazzled by 3D spaceships blasting the hell out of each other at your direction, against incredible backdrops and to superb music.
Now I know some of you Gothic fans must have played at some point; are my misty eyed sentiments stirring you?!

Cheers
Gabe

I havent played any PC games for awhile as my pc's vid card cant handle it very well, but I do play a few games on the PSP, PS3, and Wii. My latest infatuations are Fallout 3, Killzone2, and Madworld

I recently went from old clunker to snazzy new laptop, so I've been getting into video gaming myself. I've enjoyed the breathtaking graphics of Crysis and FEAR was a cracking good game, genuinely scary in places.

Just loaded Fallout 3 onto my computer (birthday present!), so far pretty interesting, but I'm yet to be hooked.

I'm in the process of making my own computer game, a real time strategy game called Defeat in Detail 2.

Nice... are you building it as a mod of an exisitng game, or coding it from scratch?

Homeworld FTW! Check out Zandris IV's HW inspired stuff: http://z4miniatures.blogspot.com/

Yes, it is inevitable that I do a 3D design and print for such a thing.

And that's some good stuff, Zombo!

It's an existing engine, but the gamecode is entirely from scratch. It's a standalone, free game, so not a mod as such. The engine was designed for a first person shooter, so I'm rather stretching the capabilities of it by making an RTS!

Yeah baby!

I've been keeping an eye on them Mr Otter, nice stuff.
The beauty of the HW ships is they are actually nice simple shapes; the textures and colours are what give them their 'look'.

*Beaten the horrible asteroid level on my second attempt, wahoo!  :p

I prefer my games with a cup o'thé.
No FPS and no RTS (which is the same to me).
What's the three letter abbreviation for round based games like Warlord and (Heroes of) Might and Magic?

Eastern Front

Operation Sealion

Divided Ground

The Airfix soldiers they use for graphics.

I've been playing Talonsofts Turn Based game Eastern Front, Western Front (c/w operation Sealion), Rising Sun and Divided Ground since I got them way back in the 90's...ish. I just can't get enough. I have even changed the simple graphics -they use the Airfix Soldiers I used to play with as a kid- for the units to look IMO more cool. You can even add/subtract units to/from your own side (even in mid campaign) and edit the terrain if you wish, or the enemy side to make it more challenging and tailor the leader pictures to whatever you like. At the moment I'm fighting across Western Europe in July 1944 using an American Armoured Corp with three  additional Combat Commands and some Paratroops elements against a reinforced SS Panzer Corp with Panzergrenidier Division and a German Infantry Corp.

And neither of Germany and Airfix is hollering about IP infringement?

Zombo, that engine is based on DirectX (and thus limited to windows)?

Nope, it's openGL, and has ports for linux and mac :)

Most days my son gives me a severe kicking on Halo 3 on his Xbox, but the only thing I really play myself is Rome:Total War. Loved it since it first appeared - cracking game, and a passable substitute for tabletop gaming.

Regards,
Reaver

I've no idea Erik... surely they have permission... at a price for the Airfix side of things. As to the Germans... do they have IP rights in this matter?  :vD
