I'm fairly unsatisfied with my current storage/transportation.  I'm using the foam trays from GW and one their nice hardshell cases.  I can fit about 4 infantry stands per slot, and 2 tanks per slot.  But overall I think they are a pain to deal with.  The infantry don't fit snug, and as such have a tendancy to migrate out of said slot and into other slots, or just out of their protective foamy embrace.  I've been thinking of moving to a simple plastic sectional hobby case with some self cut foam, but figured I'd poll the epic playing world to see what they use.  Appologies if this has been covered in another thread, but I couldn't find it if there was one.

For my troop stands and things mounted on bases, I stick some sheet magnet to the bases and put them on some thin metal sheeting. Keeps them compact and not moving around.

Mine are on a baking tray. I've not yet found any way of storing Grey Knights that doesn't snap the halberds.

I think I'm almost down to so few intact halberds that it doesn't matter.

Chessex miniature cases are perfect for Epic infantry. Each slot can hold either two 10x40 stands or two 20x20 stands. They are shallow so the stands themselves don't bounce around.

For tanks and Titans I use the standard GW cases like you do.

I have a Sabol case, the 1" tray fits most epic vehicles and infantry.

For a DIY version, you could get some PICK N PLUCK from these guys for pretty cheap:

Army Transport bags.  They are expensive but I like the fact that you can pack them any way you want.  I also use cigar boxes if I need to store them at home.  They are sturdy, stack well, and make the models smell good.

Assuming you like the smell of cigars!  :p

Plano 3700-series tackle boxes.

I can't recommend them enough.  Cheap and versatile.  When I started with them, I bought enough Plano to carry all my Orks, Marines, IG and Eldar (about the equivalent of 6 good-sized armies at that point) for the price of one GW army case and a spare set of foam inserts.

They come in a variety of divider configurations and depths, from 3/4" to 2".  Most models are light enough that a few of them in a section won't hurt even if they bounce around.  For heavier models, a thin piece of foam, like from the blisters, is usually enough to keep them from bouncing around.  Titans are in the deep cases, with foam inserts cut.  They even have trays which are half the size of the 3700 (can't recall their code number right now), so you could carry small cases side by side in the same dimensions.

They sell soft-sided and hard-sided carrying cases which keep the individual trays upright.  I have a nylon shoulder-strap bag with large external pockets.  The bag itself is large enough to carry 2 full armies with titans, plus a 1 1/2" notebook I keep with rules and army lists.  The external pockets carry dice, templates, blast markers and snacks, with lots of room left over.

Plano Tackle Webpage
The various "Boxes" tab shows the hard-sided carriers.  The various "Bags" tabs show soft-sided carriers.  The "Stowaway Utility Boxes" shows the actual storage boxes.
