Here are a few of the mixed projects I've been working on since starting my university modelmaking course a couple of years ago. I think you can see my usual obsessions creeping through in the themes and details of these early pieces... In recent years I've tried to wean myself off making everything tiny with micro-detail (all Epics fault! ![]() This one is a spaceship built up from various junk and bits and bobs from my bits boxes. Points will be awarded if anyone can guess the origin of any parts!  ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We had to write a storyboard and complete a short Flash animation and various images to go with the project, this was a space racer I dreamed up to go with the plot - its a bit of a mashup of a Vyper, some Jim Burns designs and themes from old 30s air racers. ![]() Here is the final shopped image of the mighty freighter... ![]() |

One of my favourite second year projects was this set of mini-kits I designed, based on the old TTA handbook series from the late 70s/early 80s. I built three kits, one for each race in the books, firstly the large Hornet: ![]() The diminutive Pirhana: ![]() And the little Minnow: ![]() Painting the Hornet was the craziest exercise in masking I've ever been through, but it was worth it to match the original art as best I could! ![]() ![]() |

This is the Piranha master finished (lovely and simple to build)... ![]() and this is the original artwork; ![]() and for the Hornet.... ![]() Hope you like them folks, and I'll finish on a little taster of my current project, a rather larger piece which is due to be finished in two weeks (after which I can finally paint some Eldar for TOTW!) ![]() Any questions, ask away, and I'll eb posting images of some more current stuff when it starts nearing completion! Cheers, Gabe |

Man, I can remember the Hornet. I loved those books. This is immense. The freighter looks fantastic, did you use Christmas tree lights for the cargo cylinders? |

Those are 12gram CO2 cylinders for the cargo of the freighter. Not sure about the rest of the bits. It looks great! |

Ding ding! Points to those who recognised the gas cylinders - spot on. The rest of the bits are rather more eclectic and much less recognisable (mostly odd electronics, bits of Macs, fax machines and a washing machine switching box for the bow section), but the central spine is a booster from the Space Shuttle kit (think its a Revvel model). Its great to disguise parts like this and try to bring a really odd selection of bits together - thinking about how shapes work together is key, and dressing everything with a little plasticard and a sprinkling of model components helps immensely.  ![]() I'm glad there is some TTA love here too, excellent taste chaps! The books are one of the major reasons for my scifi obsession, even if I did come to them 20 years late....  ![]() One of my tasks over the next few months is to paint up my Piranhas and Minnows, so you'll see them at some point. Anyone interested in a kit, let me know - and if you can remember your favourites from the book, let me know too, I'll be making some of the other ships up sometime soon. Gabe |
