Whilst not being the most learned in the background of any language, I came across this on the BBC website:

Termagant - meaning a quarrelsome shrew of a woman

I wonder if the author was going through a difficult period at the time and used this as a bit of light relief.

On the subject of tyranid names

Phant is as in Phantom or illusion. So elephant might be 'large illusion'
Heirophant might be 'illusion that hurts'

carnifex is latin for butcher or executioner

Pretty much the entire Tyranid line have Latin roots in their names, it follows the genus clasification feel.

I imagine the many "evil female" names were picked to reinforce the Alien series influences on the range.
