Hi everybody.

Sorry I have nt been around much recently. I saw Cyber Shadow posting on Starship Combat News and made me realise how long it had been since posting here.

Main reason was work related. I had worked my butt off since moving up to Yorkshire when I got promoted a couple of years back. Sell mny loyalty to the company was rewarded by me being made redundant as a cost saving measure.

It took me a while to get over it and for the first month I was pretty down. I had registered with several internet job boards and multiple recruitment agencies, but initially was not getting any interviews. However I carried on chipping away and just registered with more agencies and submitted more job applications.

Now I have had 4 interviews I feel things are starting to move. One job I was too inexperienced, anotgher I would have been too junior and I am waiting to hear on the other two, although I have had some initial good feedback from one.

I have filled in the time by doing stuff in the house and garden, catching up on all those tasks you put to one side when busy working. I even cleared up space in my spare room to be able to get to the painting table. So far I have done some pinning and fluing and am waiting for recipt of GW Foundation Piant set that I ordered so that I can start painting again.

On my painting desk I have some Silent Death Sigurd Archdiocese fighters, some Warmachine casters and jacks and some LOTR figures. Once they are cleared I want to do some B5 Earth Allaince & FOW US Armoured, plus also Perry Plastics ACW 28mm Unionists.

I have also used the time to read some rulebooks and try some games that I wanted to try. I have had my first intro to B5 ACTA, Full Thrust and Flames of War, also resuming playing Warmachine, LOTR and Silent Death after a gap of couple of years.

I had previously played Epic Armageddon against Kleomenes & Emperors Shadow. Hopefully we should be able to resume these soon.

I gather that GW have issued revisions to EA rulebook with some change in unit prices and stats and rules. I need to get my head around these changes. And then hopefully get back to the planned playtesting of IG Armoured Company.

Anything else big that I missed?

Cheers

James

Thanks V

I thought of you when I saw the new Brigade M.odels releases for Land Ironclads. In between that, Aquanef and Aeronef I imagine you are quite enjoying the renaissance of VSF.

On the job side it was hard to deal with at first. You go through the various stages of denial, bargaining, anger and finally acceptance. Now I can look back on it and accept as just one of those things. Shortly after I left they took the decision to close both our Birmingham and Manchester offices as well as making several people redundant in Yorkshire. So I am not the only one to have to deal with such a situation.

It did nt help that I got by food poisoning and flu in quick succesion. So I was physically down as well as mentally down. But I used the extra time to sort stuff out and also wargaming 3-4 times a week. It gave me the chance to try games that I had long wanted to. Now I just need the discipline to get painting regularly again.

Cheers

James

You bet! And its not just me.

Going down with bugs when you're already down with - well, down is bad :( Nice to see gaming helped though.
As for the painting discipline, well, every member on Tac Comms now has to paint 7 models a week and send pics to prove it, otherwise he has to clean everyone else's monitor screen for a month.... that should help  :p

LOL

Based on my previous painting track record I had better buy some more screen cleaning spray.

I shall have to leave a can on my desk as a reminder of penalties of not sticking to the painting schedule!!

Cheers

Thanks L4

But look on the bright side- it has given me the time to both play more games and sort stuff out, and also because of my redundancy payoff I was able to buy figyres for B5 ACTA, FOW & LOTR that I would otherwise have struggled to justify buying. Every cloud.....

Cheers

James

Good to see you again, WI.

You have my sympathies about your job situation. I was once unemployed for 6 1/2 months and it sucked. I went through the same series of emotions that you did.

Welcome back, WI.  Good prayers going out to you for the job possibilities.  I've been there myself and it is most certainly not fun.

As for goings on, check out my sig for some positive news in the Epic world.  The new supplement seems to be well received for fan work and hopefully will be the first of many.

What kind of Epic armies do you have?

Hi L4

How did you cope with such a long period out of work? At times I miss the discipline or structure that you get by having to get up for work each morning.

I am just chipping away on the job front at the moment. Scanning job boards and met another recruitment agency. I just wish I had nt wasted my first month spending too much time surfing net and watching cable TV. After a while even the attractions of the History Channel fade!!

Anyway now back on track and have spent time sorting out my non-gaming stuff with trips to the tip/charity store. Need to clear up so that can go through my gaming stuff that is still in storage boxes.

Aye- those are the Epic armies I have painted or at least assembled ready for battle. I also have Chaos, Nids & Eldar but they are in storage boxes until I can spend the time to paint them properly.

In have always played Imperials (either SM, IG or mix) since AT days and I went for Orks to have an occasional change. It helped that these were the 3 featured in EA rulebook.

Hopefully off tonight to play Full Thrust.  Time to remind the ESU of the downside of their "indavertent" border space incursions!!

Cheers

James

For me, the first month or two weren't so bad. The longer I was unemployed (6.5 months for me), the harder it became. What worked for me was trying really hard to stay positive. It wasn't always easy, though. It did get pretty discouraging towards the end when I still didn't have any real prospects on the horizon.

A good way to keep some structure in your day is to treat job hunting like a regular job. Wake up in the morning at your "normal" time as if you were working and then devote normal working hours to your job hunt.

Another thing that helped me was joining an unemployment support group. The main intent of the group was to help people find jobs through networking and learning effective job hunting skills, but it also was emotionally beneficial to meet people in the same situation as me.
