For anyone thats played other games often the number of men on a base indicates there special rules/type. For what could exist for Epic? Different sizes of bases is a good one (see teh scouts/large base bit), or different numbers of troops (say support 3, scouts 4, normal five, disposable 6 etc). Any other ways or certain systems that would work really well for certain armies?

The place that I have seen this the most is in the ancients world, where the number of models indicates skirmishers, heavy infantry, etc. This is great when there are a finite number of permutations.

With Epic, there are a lot of potential combinations. Personally, I think that it would be easier to code effects and special rules. For example, the Leader ability is represented by a single infantry with a banner, etc.

Its not for every army, rather for your own army, it could even be different for each of your armies (though this will cause yourself confusion!).

Funnily enough I see it most in WW2 games were a stand=a platoon.

Of course I could always copy my blood bowl teams and have the sides of bases different colours :)

Everything goes round in cycles. First edition had different coloured bases for Support, Tactical, Devastator and Assault squads.  :D

Gods, I forgot that, and here I was wondering where all those odd coloured bases came from!

I've done something similar with my Lord of the Rings minis. I use different coloured sand/ballast for each army.

Rohan - dark green
Isengard - grey
etc.

I also colour the edges of my Epic bases to differentiate them from my opponent. I also use different bases for different units.
4X1cm for Close Combat type units and 2x2cm for FF infantry. The different bases help easily identify units and their general abilities.

As to the number of minis on a stand - Unfortunately that is usually dictated by what I can afford to buy at the time (hence only 1 Tau Gun Drone to a base).
