(I've searched to see if this has been discussed before, but not found anything.)

I've noticed a number of armies now where the infantry is based on 2 pence pieces.  It looks great, allows for more variety with how you attach figures, more scope for terrain pieces, opens up a world of magnetic possibilities and also avoids those slightly unsightly armies where some are one round bases while others are on square.   I want to mount my army on two pence pieces.

However, are round infantry bases considered acceptable in Epic Armageddon tournaments?  I've never been to any before, and I'd hate to spend 6 months working on an army only to find I can't field it because of my basing choices.  Does it give an unfair advantage?  Although the size restrictions on bases are flexible I've heard that some events insist infantry is on the old SM-era squares or the newer five-in-a-row bases.

Do they still do Epic:A tournaments?

There's the WPS Club Challenge, and the GW Epic GT I understand.

Basing is extremely free in epic. I certainly can't imagine you being turned away from a tournament for having round bases!

There are 10-15 Epic Tournaments a year, most with ~20 participants.

To all appearances, the Epic tourney scene is slowly growing.

And are any of them strict with the infantry bases?

From the EA rulebook

A stand may be no more than 40mm and no less than
5mm across in any direction.
? A stand must be at least 20mm across in one direction
(ie, a 5mm by 5mm stand is not allowed, but a 5mm by
20mm stand would be okay).

? Stands representing infantry units must have at least
three infantry models and may not have more than
seven. Infantry mounted on bikes or horses must have
between two and four models mounted on each base.

Round bases are fine, a 2p coin is like a 20mm * 20mm square base witht the corners rounded!

Britcon Epic rulepack: Players are encouraged to use standard base sizes for troops (20mm square or 40mm x 10 mm), mainly because it leads to less ill feeling from other players.

What ill feeling is caused by non-standard bases?  Less vulnerable to templates?  Base contact issues?  Control zone malarkey?

Unlike most wargames, in epic measurements are taken from the models, not the bases.

A stand of 5 infantrymen is not under a template if hte base is, but none of the actual models for example.

By and large the base size is Irrelevant. However, speading your models across larger base sizes allows a stand to occupy and contest more ground.

in conclusion

a 2p coin is so close to a 20mm x 20mm square base that no one is going to have 'ill feeling'

btw E&C

I agree, despite GW's best efforts and the closure of official development (from my personal perspective at least) epic has never been so alive!

Thats hilarious, I was at Britcon, I knew all the guys there... it really wouldn't be a problem!

Good stuff.  I'm not familiar with the Epic scene, just the rules packs.  I want to attend some events safe in the knowledge I'm not upsetting people with my coins.

With a predominantly 40K background I know people can get really arsey with base sizes at tournaments.  All sorts of nonsense like unscrupulous players remounting their Eldar jetbikes on the small flying bases to make them easier to hide.

Curis
I think you will be pleasantly surprised when you make it to an Epic A tournament.
Every new player who comes, especially ones who have been to a  40k event are amazed at the friendliness of Epic events.
Don't get me wrong the top and bottom are both fiercly contested but in a friendly manner.
