I realize this is a bit of a taboo subject in wargaming, and I feel a little like a failure to admit this, but, I hate painting minis. I do. I hate it. Its odd, because I love converting minis. Love it. But I can count on one hand the number of conversions I've made that have actually gotten completely painted.

At the same time, I'm tired of not having painted minis when I play. It doesn't help that I play with people who either a) love to paint as a form of relaxation, b) paint like professional mini painters, or c) all of the above.

Therefore, after taking a long, hard look in the mirror, and realizing that I am no long a poor student with time on my hands, but rather a gainfully employed working stiff with leasure time that must be budgeted, I've decided to seek outside help.

Okay, so far, I doubt I'm any different than many people that play tabletop wargames out there. Unfortunately for me, I play Epic and that is what I want painted (and not some historical game, or Warmachine, or 40k*). This is where the problem lies. I cannot find any painting service (I've Googled and used the Miniatures Page to look for them) that has any visible experience with Epic minis.

There are a handful that do some 6mm work, but the only examples they show are historical minis. It's not that I doubt their ability to adapt and do a good job (those historical 6mm figs look awesome), it's just that I want to be able to say, "paint the shuriken catapults black," and have them know what that means. The ones I've contacted say they are confident they can do what I want, but what else would they say? They want my business, and I can't blame them for that.

So I am here to ask for your help in finding a painting service. A service that has at least some experience (with photographic proof) with painting epic minis. A service that can paint 300 infantry stands, 50 jetbike stands, and 300 assorted-sized vehcles with uniformity and quality at a reasonable pace. I don't care where they are (Thailand, Sri Lanka, Diluth, Aukland, who cares?), and while I'm not made of money, I can afford to do this right (it will just have to take longer if it costs alot).

So, do any of you have any experience with this type of thing? Do you know a specific company I can go to? Do you have a suggestion about where I can look to find a company? At the moment I'm considering taking a leap of faith and contracting either Fernando Enterprises (a Sri Lankan outfit) or DJD Miniatures (in Thailand via Vancouver, WA). Anyone have any knowledge of these guys? Anyone know where I can go to get some feedback on their work in general?

I need help (as my wife often tells me).

If you can help provide some guidance (and are willing to do so) PM me, or post in reply.

Thanks,

Jim

Whilst I can't help, I can sympathize as I will never be a good (or patient) painter.

Try asking on Warseer.

There are several dozen chaps who run painting services there.

You could try Bartertown, also.

I will look into posting on Bartertown and Warseer. I hadn't thought about those sites.

If wishes were horses, I'd hire TuffSkull, since he obviously had experience painting not just epic minis, but ELDAR epic minis. Unfortunately, it appears he's no long in the paint for hire business (at this point in time, in any event).

Anyone have personal experience hiring someone to pain their minis? One thing that's harder to find than a painter with Epic experience is finding feedback on their work.

It is certainly worth asking Paul, since he specialises in Epic in a way that most other painters dont. However, he is fairly busy with DRM, but he wont be offended if you ask.  :D

I'm not sure if we have any hired brushes amongst the denizens here but maybe?  I've always done my own but I know people who have used Fernando Enterprises and I have seen their work in person (28mm US Colonist and Indians).  The wargame quality was actually pretty good and included some shading.

A friend of mine uses Evil Bob's Biz for historicals.  Evil Bob does his research and historical accuracy is at a level you will not find with the mass services,  Osprey or not.

Well, I asked at my club tonight (in London) and may have some people who can help out. PM me if you would like me to put you in touch. They did ask a number of questions about what you wanted painting, and whether you would provide the minis or not but you can talk that over with them if you want to proceed. Also, one club member still has a reasonable amount of stuff in boxes which he has been releasing over the years (typically via Ebay) so may be able to help out if you need particular minis.

Just so everyone understands, I'm not necessarily soliciting a painter from here (not that I'm against that either), I'm just wondering if anyone has experience with hiring a painter. Once upon a time, I paid a friend of mine to paint a 40k squad for me (based on an single example model I did myself) and they turned out fine, but it's not really something I'd want to do again (kind of along the lines of never lending/borrowing money from a friend).

Also, I'm not looking for minis, I own everything I need (which is actually one reason I've decided to go ahead and get things done). As an aside, I still have to finish up converting some of my figs, but I have far more confidence that I'll get that done than I have in the my motivation to then paint the things.

It's good to hear that Fernando and Evil Bob's have done good work. I had considered both of those sites, and the comment reinforces that.

I did have a thought tonight driving home from work, and maybe I could get some opinions on it. Since I have so much that needs painting, I'm considering having someone more experienced with Epic (and probably more expensive) to paint up exemplar pieces, which I could send to a mass-painting service to use as examples to do the full army. This would still be 30-40 infantry stands, 10-20 vehicles and basically all of the special character-type stuff, so it would hopefully be worth the 'quality' painters time to take the job. Is that too insulting (for lack of a better word) to either of the painters?

Well, I believe the usual way of going about this would be exactly as you outline - sending the painter the items you want painting together with colour-schemes etc, and ideally a sample or illustration of each item. The alternative is for the painter to provide you with samples of work based on your description, or possibly a combination of the two approaches to ensure that the painter is happy to do the work, and that you are happy with the proposed result.

You would need to decide whether you wanted the figures based or not (and supply the relevant bases); what poses (if any) you need especially for vehicles; whether you need flags or other insignia (and whether these can be supplied in the form of decals); how you want the items finished (varnished or not) etc.

Obviously you would need to specify quantities and timeframes up front, together with consideration of things like packaging, freight and insurance etc and agree on the means of payment (paypal seems a good option). I don't believe these quantities would be "insulting" per se, providing everyone is clear up front what is expected from either side.
