You have relatives? I always assumed you were some sort of an unearthed artifact, granted artificial intelligence and working towards some sort of secret goal. A goal involving very small toy soldiers. If we're going to attempt this, I will need to know the general size, mass and piece count. |

If we're going to attempt this, I will need to know the general size, mass and piece count. General size: 6mm scale components. Mass: Not big! Piece count: Let's start with... ~20 different molds, each containing a sprue with a number of components on it. Feel free to bounce me a PM people!

Griffin Moulds in the UK are top quality, and fast. Pricing will depend on size and materials - if you've used plastic, superglue, polymer clay or any of the other non-vulcanisable materials, then you need to pay for two moulds, unfortunately - a master mould first, which will be used to cast in vulcanisable resin (expensive stuff...), then a production mould. Each mould is about ?45 for 9" moulds, which will fit roughly 12-14 28mm figures. Each spin of the mould is ?3, plus metal at ?10 per kilo. Griffin replace moulds free when they wear out. If you want to make an estimate of the number of figures you can place in the mould, ?draw a 9? diameter circle on some paper. ? Then move the compass point in ? inch. ?Draw an other circle. ? ?Now move in another inch and ?. ?Draw another circle. ?The area between the 2nd and third circles is the usable area of the mould. ? Place figures around the circle allowing about ? to ? ?inch between each figure. This'll give you a rough estimate. As an example of Griffin's quality, here's a 90mm Celt I had done by them. Virtually zero flash, and mould lines are hardly noticeable. Hope this helps! Reaver |

I assume it's not worthwhile attempting to use this stuff at home. It might be, but I've never been able to find anywhere that sells it! It's the same stuff both GW and Reaper use, so if you know someone at either company... If you are absolutely set on home casting, then it can be difficult to find companies willing to part with moulds. All the ones I've contacted will only mould if they're getting the casting work too. If you can find one, then melting pots, ladles and metal can still be bought from Prince August miniatures. 1ListSculpting (the Yahoo! Group) used to have files on building your own spin caster - might be worth checking to see if they still have them. So did the Moulding and Casting Group. If you've ?1100 spare, or a friendly credit card company, then Tiranti's CentriCast machine could be a good buy. I've not used it, but apparently it fits on your desk, and makes moulds suitable for metal without vulcanising, and also works as a metal spincaster - mould making and spincasting all in one machine... Then again ?1100 buys 10 moulds and about a thousand 28mm figures from Griffin - so is it worth the hassle of doing it yourself? Regards, Reaver |
