Hi all, receiving news from materials engineering associations results in some odd bits of interesting information surfacing. Take a peek here: Railgun! That was 2006; the latest news says the first has been delivered for trials to the USN. ![]() |

Oh yes, Railguns (or, more correctly, coil guns) have left the realms of SciFi a while ago. They are able to fire projectiles leaving the barrel in excess of Mach1, and I think that they are set to revitalise the standard battleship design and take the initiative back from aircraft carriers... in part. |

For operations within 25 miles of a coastline, battleships have always been more effective and cost-efficient than aircraft carriers. They can deliver more ordinance faster. |

(CyberShadow @ Nov. 21 2007,10:23) QUOTE Railguns (or, more correctly, coil guns) Railguns and coilguns/gauss guns are different concepts. Railguns use the fact that electrical current passing through a magnetic field induces a physical motion. This is the inverse of a generator using physical motion through a magnetic field to induce an electrical current. Current passes through the projectile inside a magentic field and it's accelerated physically. Wiki on railguns. Gauss guns use the magnetic field to directly impel the projectile. It's more or less the same concept used in particle accelerators - basically a series of selenoids firing in sequence with each one imparting a small amount of kinetic energy. Wiki on coil/gauss guns. |

I remember reading about rail gun theory back in the 80's as a High School student. It is great to finally see them (almost) being used. Beautiful weapon concept it is. Although I am curious about the actual power consumption, voltage requirements, etc. Not that I want to build one (okay I do want to build one ![]() |

I doubt we'll see new true battleships due to the cost involved. Probably more likely is a fleet of frigates and destroyers with shallow drafts for brown water ops. |

I just meant that in Science Fiction, the two concepts are often confused with each other, and terms used incorrectly. |

Yes, I agree with D/S & Sarge ... FFs & DDs with Railguns for coastal support ops ... |
