I have recently been wondering exactly why I like certain games more than others, and what I actually look for in a game that I am actually likely to play. I discovered that probably the most important thing to me in a game is the potential of the player/force. I like detail, but beyond that is the ability to play the game in different ways, with different styled forces. So, what do you guys actually look for, that seperares the 'play one day' games from the 'play as often as I can' games? |

I like Space Battles. I have always liked that since Star Wars, Buck Rogers & Battlestar Galactica. Once I entered the 40k universe and Battlefleet Gothic got released I jumped into that. Of course it needs more then: 'hey a space battle!' I think, for me, it boils down to: Playability. Is the game fun to play? Detail is fine as long as I don't need to read 1 hour after every turn every game. |

Great models with inspired - and inspiring - designs; bonus points if there's scope for converting stuff. |

Games that take 3 hours or less, emulate big battles, have a good balance between complexity and streamlining. Plus small miniature scale, 6mm is the best. |

Nice models are a must - as is a game which rewards careful play; not necessarily complicated/detailed, but with depth of play. But I'm also a big fan of good quality, detailed background info; I spend a lot (too much!) of time thinking about background stuff... Regards, Reaver |

Rulesets that have emergent behavior - complex events stemming from simple rules. |

Easily understood rules. Usually this ends up being more a function of poor writing, editing, and layout than what was actually intended. Easily scalable from a small fight to a knock-down drag-out bloodbath. Meaning that the rules don't break down the instant you play something other than "tournament standard" sized games. Streamlined play. I don't have a lot of gaming time. Apparently for me it has to be Sci-Fi. I have some fantasy figured that have been primed literally for years. Even with my wife pestering me to finish them as well as all the other minis that go with that game so we can play. What really makes it a game that I can obsess about and dream up crazy tactics while in the shower is a game that allows a lot of flexibility in force organization and subtle changes to the organization have the capability to make a big difference on the table. |

I like games where realistic playing is usually rewarded with success but even the most daring of actions has a chance of winning - dare I take a chance or play it real/safe? Of course, feathery hats, airships and submersible ironclads are highly desireable too! ![]() |
