Looking at the various wargaming bits that I have collected over the years, I wondered... if you could go back to visit yourself, just as you were starting the hobby, what advice would you give yourself?

Personally, I would probably tell myself not to get distracted. It is fine to look at what rules and games are out there, but keep your miniature collection themed. Perhaps then I would not end up with so many boxes of stuff, and so little actually usable forces for any game!

Don't buy those 28mm space marines to paint to match your epic one cos they look kinda cool!

Don't spend too much money on 40k to get armies. Only but miniatures you REALLY want to paint for those systems.

Similar to me.

"You are hardly going to use those 40k armies. Just buy a few models you like to paint... actually don't bother even doing that just get more Epic!"

Hindsight is easy!

Don't do a PhD on a part time basis when you're almost 40 - if you HAVE to waste time, go paint some of the tonnes of models you are inevitably going to accumulate. Trouble is, I never was one for taking advice. Sigh...

I would probably tell myself NOT to try to collect each of the armies for Epic.

I'd tell myself - ?buy as many models as you can now, they're going to be damned expensive in the years to come, when you're STILL a sucker for collecting models. ?:;):

I'd also say to me (pre 1987), make sure you get as many of those really cool Macross robot kits as you can, they're cheap now, they'll be great for 40k in future, and they'll be so hard to get hold of they'll be like hen's teeth. Oh, and dont get any stupid ideas of breaking them up for conversion purposes, you'll never make anything as cool as the original models! (Dammit!)

:D

Hmmm...  I think I would persuade my past self to hoard loads of the Epic sprues, when GW started selling them off cheap (especially Tyranids)... :;):

I only collect 6mm Sci-fi - 10+ Epic Armies (every one they make, sorry D/S ! :D ), DRM & E/W and that's all !  Plus select terrain ...   And that keeps me very, very, busy  !  :)

When you get your first proper job after Uni go into your nearest GW shop as you will have the money and they will be selling off Epic 40k cheap.

Buy ALL you can from the GWUS Epic bitz archives. They're going to be closed soon. You won't starve if you have to subsist on water for a couple of days...

You'll get over getting rid of armies but don't throw out your bits box - EVER.
