Quote (Ilushia @ 27 May 2006 (22:46)) | Probably something totally stupid, like try to make the scale bigger. Or at least make the game potentially viable at larger sizes, rather. I'd love to be able to play things like a planetary foot-hold scenario involving like 3 Space Marine Battle barges, 5-10 Strike Cruisers, and a few hundred thousand IG soldiers fighting to take a landing area on a planet and begin an invasion. WHich would, of course, be totally impractical and take forever to resolve. But it'd be way fun. It'd be like playing D-Day in WWII miniatures.
"You have a heavily fortified landing point which the enemy is about to try and break into. You have 155,000 IG soldiers and 10,000 Space Marines. Good luck."
And no, I have no idea how I'd even attempt to make something like that playable (Well, I have a few, but they'd almost certainly be impossible to actually use in any worth-while fashion.) |
..for the last few years,we've been playing campaign type games in Micro armour (6mm). We've made some maps, but the most enjoyable has been the topographic maps of our area. Of course this has been with 'istorical troops(being 'istorical players). We cover the maps with plastic overlay,or sheet protectors. to show where the forces are we use a wide and quite available range of xtra fine pens that erase rather well(only when you want them to erase! ). Now with this being known, both sides have identical maps of the AO (Area of Operations). On each map you mark the spot or the formation type that a unit would occupy. After a map turn is done a judge would take both overlays and put one on top of the other, then of course lay these over the same map. This would of course show where a conflict would develope. In our case we would represent a playing area of 5'X 4' ,our flocked tiles that we use here. The judge would also have a plastic overlay representing the table size to the map scale. If there are enough players at the time more than 1 tactical area may be set up at a time. For quick change terrain we of cousre have buildings, styrofoam type hills, and use felt. The felt represents terrain such as woods, roads, streams, and hull down areas. Its not world class A1 terrain, but it is rather pleasing to the eye. I'm am looking forward to doing a Netepic campaign using this method and my experience. Did I mention quick change?...
