"The Honor Harrington" series was fun reading until book three. Then I gave up on them. By book three they had taken it so far I was bored. It would have been better to have built up to that level over the series.

As often happens in long term series this is when it starts to get interesting...The first three books set up the backstory and a majority of the books after that keep relating back to these three...I'm currently on #8 and every one after #2 has related directly to one or more of the ones before it...Granted she raises in rank pretty fast but that's also atributed to the 1-2 (T-)year jumps between most of the books...

Started Fatherland by Robert Harris this morning...

From Amazon; "Set in 1964, with Hitler having won the war and ruling over a Greater German Reich, a German policeman investigates a supposedly routine death and ends up uncovering a secret that some people will go to any length to protect."

Good stuff so far.

I like Fatherland, read it about three or four times now.

However I didn't think much of his other stuff (it was okay), but my wife thought Pompei was good.

On another note, some other excellent series of books in the SciFi military genre are the Bolo series about giant robotic tanks with self aware AIs and a Human pilot

Originally created by Keith Laumer, most of the books are a series of non connecting short stories by a range of authors such as David Weber, Linda Evans and William H Kieth.  There are a couple of book which are stand alone novels as well

The series is published by baen books and the list is here
http://www.baen.com/series_list.asp#BOLO

I have the whole set- they are awesome! :D

Some of the Bolo series is better then others though. A few times I felt I was reading something "Forced". But then, I am not saying I did nt like them.  :;):
