One of the things I loved about the game was 90% of the thought needed to play was in the list building. So I could have a few army lists already built and in my "army box" with the figures. ? ?No need to worry about tactics, just charge and roll the dice. He who tricked out his list the best wins.

This is the main thing I dislike about 40k- When my Eldar were getting shot up and hacked down at a local club by some Space Wolves, the advice I was given was; 'get some more Drak Reapers and Fire Dragons' ... :L ?Hmm, personally I prefer to play games where you can really think about what you are doing in a battle, come up with tactical solutions that developed during the game, and so on... This is what Epic40k is very good at IMHO.....

Of course, I still play 40k, I just seem to loose quite often because I like to paint the models I like, rather than tailor my army to make it a perfect game winning one.....  :)

Hi!

While epic has the certain "something" that brings me back again and again, warhammer40k has that certain something that makes me shun it. I played it in those so called "glory" days of rogue trader. I thought the game wasn't very good then, it was open to abuse like crazy. Later versions didn't change much either IMO. The game is 90% army construction, 5% setup, 4% winning initiative and .00001& strategy.

In addtion to this, I dont like much the "crowd" that gathers to play this game. I was a retailer, I remember very well the "special" people that played the game. Granted there is always some people who rise above the childish behavior and we become good friends and gaming buddies. But its a rarity.

Not my cup of tea.

Sadly this has been the case for years and while it exists in many games, it typifies GW games and W40k especially.  The "Min/Max"ers really get up my nose, but then again I dont hev to play with them.  I'm with stormseer here- I'd rather have a balanced and properly constructed army and lose than a specialised cheese force.

Then again, I only play Epic and BFG now from the GW range (with occaisional forays back to Space Hulk) and find much more pleasure in WW2 and historicals.  Epic of course is my escapism, but if i want a "realistic" SF game I'll play Dirtside.  Then again if I really want a realistic game I wont be playing SF will I :;):

Are you still playing OGRE?

Yeah- kinda...  It more just collecting/painting the models, and I play a few pbem games.  Its there in the background bubbling away, but I'm focused back on Epic right now!

Plus I have to rebuild my website from scratch because my software crashed, and I really cant face that right now..

Let me guess? Blimming Frontpage?

I hail from the UK, I know quite a few UK gamers - actually we could probably have a convention here at some point.

I will raise it on the mailing list, if we arrange it for Nottingham then maybe we could convince the Fanatic team to come along.

Actually I think they have a special day every week set aside for it.

As a plus point I could visit my ex at the same time ;). (This would be the one of the ex's who doesn't want to kill me every time we meet).

To be honest, the reason I liked it was, at the time, I wanted a game that was more on the "beer and pretzels" side of things then one that needed brain power.

My one friend had an interesting point of view. He said WH40K and chess were alike. No link to reality, just pieces that had defined powers and weakness and you moved them around the table with total annihilation as the end goal.

Of course as you might guess, he won alot because he did not care what the model looked like, rather he cared what it's stats were. To him, it was just a way to win.

To each his own....

I am not sure I agree with this. You have the strategy set too high  :p

You also forgot the "rules lawyer bluff" in the mix

So I think it should be:

90% army list trick out
5% table set up
4% Win Initiative
.5% Lucky Dice Rolls
.499999999999% Good Rules Lawyer Bluff Skill
.000000000001% Strategy

:D :p

So I guess we are all in general agreement about 40K ... it's a step above checkers but with prettier pieces ...

I think that would depend on who is doing the painting, I have seen some minis that are worse then the plastic checkers.....

Granted this thread has probably been of topic for months...but to return to the original question:

6' x 4', lightly flocked and sealed on one side, and painted with a starfield on the other for those all-important BFG engagements. Actually, it was originally built for a space combat system written by my club in the early 90s - the great thing being that it encompassed Space.Fleet (as it then was), Star Wars, Star Trek, B5, Aliens, Space 1999, Buck Rogers, Battlestar Galactica, Wing Commander and anything else that featured the merest hint of spacefaring. Great days, if an insanely overcomplex system by the end.

In the heyday of 2nd Ed, I organised an outdoor mega-battle using six 6 by 4 tables to make a mighty 18' x 8'; we even made use of improvised war room-style shoving sticks to maneouvre near the centre. Whilst it was ultimately an Ork victory (curses!) our finest hour came when a sparrow intervened by overturning a couple of Bad Moon warbands that were about to rout my Roughriders. Emperor be praised!

Are flying titans covered in the rules?

Sounds like a great game. How many points per side? How long was the game?
