I still think your average Brit would think of the Finnish variety first. ?The alternative meaning only really applies to inner cities.

No, no, the other variety is found in the provinces too, I think that is the variety most people think of first.

IN Edinburgh there is also another interpretation for sauna given the blind eye turned towards... err.... ladies of negotiable affections if you catch my drift  :p

Lets just say whether the sauas dry heat or wet heat will be the least of your concerns  :D

The same thing has happened with "massage parlors" here in the US.

This is exactly what I meant when I said people may get a wrong impression about what saunas are for.

Yes, a real sauna would be nice !  While in the ROK with the US Army, the "steam baths" were quite a treat. Especially on a pass from the DMZ !  But I'll leave that up to your imaginations ! :D  :;):

Now, now, L4, didn't they teach you grunts anything?  What goes on det(achment, or deployment) stays on det.

I believe the phrase I'll use to keep this no more than PG13 is 'It must have been excellent stress relief.' :;):  :D

I used to go every other day when I lived in Finland, but now that I'm back in the UK, I only go when I go back to visit.

Still, hopefuly that will all change again in the next year or so. :p

I really miss it, I find it very good for stretching the muscles, especially when work involves alot of physical labour.  I also agree that a wood burning heater is much better than an electric one, the heat just seems to feel better and more constant, and then there is the lovely aroma of the birch wood and tar, and the lovely ice cold bottle of Karhu afterwards :)

I got back from Finland earlier today, only 1 day late (thanks Finnair  ), and already I'm missing it, now have to wait 7 weeks until my next visit for Christmas and New Year.
