Hi Stormseer,

Quote (stormseer @ 13 2005 Aug.,02:28)
I read 'The White Mountains' when I was about 10 or 11, seems a long while ago now, but I can still remember some of it- not least where the boys use a penkife (iirc) to remove a chunk of metal acting as a tracking device to the tripods from one of their number's arm.. without anaesthetic, ouch. :(
*** Is this correct Maksim? ***
- that was my first recollection of the book!

Yes, that was correct.

I finished reading the trilogy and enjoyed it very much.

Trisymmetric aliens are cool! :O

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Oh yes, classic Sf stuff now...

Currently by the bedside is Harry Harrison's "The Stainless Steel Rat Joins the Circus".
I loved the orginal book, which is a well written tounge-in-cheek romp featuring the only 'real' criminal in the galaxy- the wonderful Jim DiGriz, the Rat of the title...

This sequel is not _quite_ up to the highly amusing original, but is still very readable and good fun, and makes a change from the hard SF I've been reading of late.

Too busy to read anything properly at the moment- most sad.

I try each night only to wake up with the book plastered to my face sometime later! :p

Al from my UK trip:
The Osprey campaign series 'Hampton Roads' (ACW ships - whee!).
Terry Pratchett's 'The Post' - fun!
Hammerin' Iron - ACW ship rules :D
'Ere we go - not an English reader or footie rag, but one of the ancient 40k Ork rulebooks chock full of tables on which to roll for weapon effects, bionik bitz, and several pages of Madboy behaviour charts - cumbersome, but fun :D :D
I'd bought a copy of Freebooterz, the companion volume, ages ago, and was looking out for this.
Dredd vs Death - comic (original) version - ok, so I like comics too.

cheers all.

"The War in the Air", H.G. Wells

A Classic, Nef-tastic book!  Rather prophetic in its analysis of the inability of aircraft to be decisive (ie take and hold ground) despite their devestating potential.  Soem rather anti-Imperialistic type flavour in parts, but very thought provoking, imaginitive and enjoyable.

Hi,

Finished an old ragged copy of Ian Waston's "Inquisitor" during the Epicomms downtime. Quite interesting, with an old skool 40k flavour, but part one of a series, so the story doesn't really get to a good conclusion at the end.

Also stormed through "Last Human" by Doug Naylor. Based on Red Dwarf, so very funny and easy to read.

Next up are...
"Band of Brothers" by Stephen Ambrose
"Emperor: The Field of Swords" by Conn Iggulden
"Sharpe's Siege" and "Sharpe's Havoc", both by Bernard Cornwell.
And a heap of Discworld novels.

Cheers,
Freshmetal

Band of Brothers is on my "to read" list also.

I think the next book I pick up will be The DaVinci Code.

EDIT: Yay, I'm a lieutenant again!!

Hi!

I'm starting to read the Empire and Foundation books. We'll see if they live up to the expectations.

Yep, Band of Brothers is very good !  As was the Da Vinci code, but at a different level ... Hey Justin, weren't you reading a Hammer's Slammers novel ?  And Wells was correct and many don't see it, air power does have it limitations !  Nothing beats (well armed & lead) boots on the ground !  Read =][= years ago and sold it on Portent, not bad.  And read Asimov's classic in high school ...  :D
