Let's be honest. How many fictional characters are actually pretty complex creatures? Dirk Pitt and Al Giordino are pretty simple people. The most complex fictional character I know of is Spenser.
Also, I think they nailed the attitude of a 15 year-old kid perfectly in book 5. You can see the kids grow up through the progression of the stories.
Gods have mercy on the bad guys. Harry's mad enough to use the unforgivable curses with real effect (something they discussed in book 5), and he's going hunting. I see one mean knock-down, drag-out fight coming in the end of Book 7.
The most fearsome thing in the world is someone that has had everything taken from him, nothing left to live for, and facing a direct threat to their last remaining friend, and Voldemort has done just that to Harry.
I enjoy the books because they are novel. While there are lots of 'alternate worlds' out there where magic is real, but Harry's world is ours. To the vast majority of people, Magic doesn't exist. There are a few other people that write like that, but their books are written in White Wolf's World of Darkness for adults, but for a 10 year-old child, while still being not being "just a kid's book".
My grandparents have read my copies, and while Grandpa couldn't get into the first book, Grandma loved them, and read them all.
