As an added note, "base contact" is used when deciding if a unit is in close combat or not, so a bigger base gives more of a chance of the enemy being able to contact you... so, it all evens out in the wash.

If done with cover ont he base for them I'd consider it top notch.

Okay, I guess I'll give it a go then.

So, anyone know what diameter drill bit I should use to drill the holes out so the infantry will be flush with the base? (I'm going to have a strip of metal on the bottom of the base so I can use magnetic sheets to store/transport my units, so the infantry models will actually be glued to those)

1/4 of an inch works like a charm.

I don't know about a hole punch Warmaster bases are at least 1.5mm thick.  That's would have to be a hell of a hole punch.

I figured I'd use a drill to make the holes, and a hole punch to makes shims to make sure the models fit flush.

In any event, I did an inventory of my bases last night, and I discovered that I don't have as many as I thought I did (I think I must have given some away). That means the Rangers will stay on the normal bases. Fortunately, I do have enough to fit all my support weapons on them.

I actually got so into the idea of putting the Pathfinders on warmaster bases that I got disappointed that I didn't have enough to do it. I went to see if I could get some more, but GW doesn't sell them anymore. Figures. If I can manage to pick 12-18 more of the things, the Pathfinders are definitely going on them, if only so that they can be easily distiguished form the Ranger stands.

Good point:  my idea was not to use the hole punch on the WM base, but rather a Zuzzy terrain mat cut to 2x4cm.

I've tried it: it's a little awkward because a hand punch doesn't work on latex all that well.

So I'm less optimistic... but I still like the idea of using pieces of the terrain mat instead of using sand and flocking -- much easier and cleaner.

By the way, I've noticed that craft stores sell various shapes of wood, one of which -- the wood rectangles -- is probably 39x20mm.  I've only seen these in three-packs with a smaller and larger rectangle as well: appx 40 4x2 rectangles as well as another 90 rectangles in smaller sizes: $3.00 for the package.
