Quote (stormseer @ 26 2005 June,01:38) | Oh, and I see he reccomends 'The Forever War' by Joe Haldeman...
Another VERY interesting read, using the concept of future war and the problems of relativistic speeds and advancing technology to emphasise the futility of so many conflicts- particularly that in Vietnam, whihc I believe Halderman fought in. Very interesting ideas about technology and society as well. | Agree all - its a great book. And yes Halderman is a 'Nam vet
I understand his "supertanks" is very good too, but Ive never been able to find a copy

The futility of Vietnam, certainly comes thru in Drake's writings, as I have said. And he "only" served, one tour, a year. Many of my cadet instructors served two or three tours ... Excellent training that I use throughout my assignments to 4 Infantry Bns and other combat units, all over the planet in a 10? year period. I'm afraid we'll see another generation of vets who served 2-3 or more tours in the ME/SW Asia theaters, because of the US Gov't's military cutbacks in the '90s ... It may spawn another list of military Sci-fi authors.

I had one uncle who was assigned to the Navy ships off the coast. He spent two "tours" in an air conditioned equipment room aboard a large warship far from the real fighting. I'll bet someone who searved one tour in the infantry in the middle of the fighting was effected by it more then my uncle was.

I agree that the physical stress and hardship factor varies greatly not only between services but with employment also - most certainly correct.
However, I dont think you can qualify that thay because he was sittin gin a dark room looking at a radar screen waiting for aircraft to attack at any time, or run into a mine (both very real threats there, especially close inshore where the ships did most of their NGS work) that the mental stress and its effect was any less. Remember too that the guys at sea had no firebases to rest in and were out there 24/7

Agree completely, don't misunderstand me, that's what I was intimating. ?One tour with the 11th ACR (like Drake) would have been enough for me ! ?Most of my instructors were Airborne, Rangers and/or SF. So they were in the "SH*T! ?If you know what I mean ("only"). And when I got to the 101 in Jan '80, most senior NCOs and many CPTs and above were wearing combat patches on their uniforms. ?Believe me after my "limited" experiences in the 10? years with the Infantry during the ?"Cold War", just being a Grunt is stressful. ?I was not berating Drake's one tour ... ?Being a former Grunt ... I know and my past is never far from my thoughts. ?After 15 years as a civilian, I'm still having trouble "re-adjusting" in some areas. ?Maybe that's why some ?(even whom I may have considered friends) say I'm weird or "F**ked Up ... maybe I am ... ?

For those of you who, like me, are history junkies and read more than just military history (again, like me), I highly recommend Guns, Germs and Steel. I finished it last week and I must say it is one of the best nonfiction books I have ever read.
I'm now working my way through Iron Hands. It's not bad.

I've heard that title before ... an it's supposed to be well done. My buddy just gave me a HB copy of "The Da Vinci Code". I may start that when I finish SUN TZU. And I just got W/D 307 in the mail so I'll be perusing that too !

NOVEL: "Gate of Fire" by Steven Pressfield.
Hi Guys,
I little blew through "Gates of Fire" by Steven Pressfield. It took me three days as was just as good as I remembered it from the first time I read it.
"Gates of Fire" is about the Battle of Thermopylae that took place in 480 BCE. In 480 BCE, a hand-picked force of three hundred Spartan warriors along with their auxilia and allied forces (Numbered around 5,000 combatants) took on the nearly two million troops of the Persion despot, Xerxes the Great, and brought the advance of the despot to a stop for nearly a week valiantly sacrificing their lives in an action which saved the Peloponesse (Greater Greece) and very likely saved democracy and modern society as we know it. Pressfield's prose is very engaging and he manages to bring the battles of history alive in a way that endears the protagonist to his reader and makes the reader want to know more.

"Gates of Fire" is a great book and I highly recommend it.
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.
